Some are claiming this is a smart move since attaching George Santos to the GOP could make the latter party less attractive. Also, here are the folks who voted no: https://twitter.com/MI_James57/status/1719873415383798005

What would the results have looked like if Pelosi was still in charge?

Even if they had voted yes, it still wouldn't have been enough, right? Don't they need two-thirds?

Who picks his replacement if he's expelled? What's NY law say about that?

Because if it's one of those "governor picks a replacement," then we get a year of an actual Democrat in there.

If it's a special election in that, if I remember, very red district, then you're right about there being no reason to oust Santos.

So what happens if Santos wins reelection? Is that unpopular to even consider?

People thought Boebert, Gaetz, and MTG were horrible candidates and they somehow won reelection.

The incumbent Democrat left his seat to run for governor from Kathy Hochul's right. The Democratic Party failed basic opposition research only to have Santos' fraudulent record get exposed in the weeks after election day.

More broadly, the NY Democratic party, with the Mayor of NYC all but calling his city a warzone, suffered the party's biggest setbacks of the 2022 midterms, likely costing Democrats the House. There's a pretty clear cut divide between Democrats' performance in and out of the NYC media market (which includes much of NJ and all of George Santos' district).

It's just impossible. Democrats aren't going to vote for someone this transparently dishonest and evil and Republicans won't vote for him because it was revealed that he used to be a drag queen.

Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) released the following statement regarding her vote against expelling Rep. Santos before theres been due process:

"Rep. Santos clearly violated the public trust, and I wouldve voted to censure him and do believe it would be appropriate for him to resign. The gravity of expulsion demands due processby the Ethics Committee, our courts, or another impartial fact finder. To date, the Ethics Committee has not finished its investigation, and Rep. Santos has not been convicted. The House would set a dangerous precedent if we expelled a member without allowing one of these processes to conclude."

I respect this, to an extent, since if they vote to remove before a conviction, it sets a dangerous example that Republicans can follow.

This is assuming, of course, that if the investigation results in a conviction, they immediately vote to expel him.

To add to what the others were saying, all of the controversies surrounding him did not come out until after he won. Which is obviously a failure from the oppo research on the dems part.

But the reasoning for not expelling him is sound, he is massively unpopular in his district now that all the dirt came out. He will get crushed.

It is, to be fair. I believe that even if all 31 Democrats had voted to remove him, it still would have failed, since it wouldn't have been 2/3rds. Blaming Democrats for this is just more right wing rhetoric.

I think they are just saying this because Santos is a free win next election. If we do a special election they still get enough time to find a less ridiculous candidate to put up for 2024.

We don't really lose anything with Santos remaining in the house, its already a total shitshow.

And plus, they would try to use this precedent to expel people for even the most benign statements supporting Palestinian people.

Less of an advantage.

They will put up a better presenting republican that won't hurt the rest of NY republican incumbents.

And literally nothing changes with a generic republican in his seat from now until the 2024 election.
