This is something that really annoys me. When people refer to the US as America, some people would correct them and say that America is a continent, not a country. I think that is ridiculous. First of all, it is obvious what they mean when they say America. Second of all, there is no such thing as one continent called America. There are two continents: North America and South America. They are clearly separated by geography, in like one of the best ways. Like Europe and Asian that really should be one place. The Middle East that should be in Africa. That got those wrong. But people want to complain about the one that they got right. Like it sounds good for the snappy come back, but come on. And after writing all this, I honestly don't know why it bothers me so very much. I just odd I guess.

Anyone else have pet peeve that just bother you do not reason.

So no, American is not separated unless you're adamant about north and south being different.

I agree with TC. It's a lame attempt at trying to bash or be edgy against the US. Referring to the US as America is not demeaning to the other countries in North and South America.

Could be worse. Could be [insert African nation here].

There are geologic traits that make North and South different it is not random. Like if you are going to put those two together why not Europe and Asia?

America, Afroeurasia, australia, antarctica. These are the 4 continents.

People being pedantic is annoying af. You can tell from context when America is referring to the USA and not the continent. People just think they're being super clever when they do that, but instead they just come off as kinda dumb cause it's obvious what's being talked about.

Imagine every time someone says South Africa, you correct them and say "Actually it's the Republic of South Africa. That country doesn't cover all of Southern Africa so you need to specify you're talking about the country and not the geographical region."

It's the exact same logic.

Pedants, ackshually and hair splitting types. Just ignore them.

In some Spanish news channels I've heard the term "Estadounidense" thrown around which translates to something like United Stater.

Irks me when people refer to the US as the "land of the free", or to the president as "leader of the free world".

We're not the only democratic nation in the world and our president has fuck all for authority over the others.

We were taught that there are 7 continents and that there are numerous geographical groupings.

by the way there's already a geographic grouping that places the middle east with north Africa following your logic

There really isn't any reason for Europe to be a continent.

My understanding is that most South (and possibly middle) American countries view the Americas as one continent.

Spanish speakers trying to change this is like English speakers trying to force "Latinx" to be a thing.
