This is such a weird take to me.

  • He wasnt a simp. He literally couldnt be with her without killing them both.
  • Eren was just brooding anime badass #46397 for most of post-timeskip. The ending (along with his talk with Reiner and the flashback where he has visions of the rumbling) make him into a real character again. One thats way more consistent with his pre-timeskip persona than brooding anime badass to boot.
  • Eren having hopes and dreams for the future and having to give them up, while also making himself a monster (remember, he viewed Marleyans, as a people, as the same as Eldians and was disgusted by the Rumbling) was a pretty good sacrifice moment. It was basically that old hypothetical Would you kill the rest of the world/yourself or kill your family/friends played out but if you choose the former, you need to personally kill each person.
  • And before someone says it, no, Eren didnt fail because of the epilogue. His goal was to give his friends a chance, not to end all war forever.
The ending was fine. It couldve been better, but it couldve been much worse.

They stop Eren but he has already killed 80% of humanity. Mikasa, with help from the other heroes, kills him and then kisses his decapitated head. Titans stop existing but the prejudice is still clearly there. You see in the epilogue that they're slipping back into fascism again despite the heroes trying to bring world peace (they say it's kill or be killed, but the heroes are trying to create a UN type organization). During the credits you see the city advancing and becoming more modern suggesting maybe they succeeded in bringing about peace but then a nuclear missile hits and annihilates everything. After the credits a boy and a dog discover a tree where Mikasa buried Eren's head after she killed him.

i wouldn't say better circumstances. The power of the Titans have always been used for war and death. Though with paradis getting bombed to hell I can kinda see where people didn't like the ending? Basically the world rebuilt over centuries and attacked the island anyway, basically making Eren 's sacrifice pointless.

There's only so far you can take that though. You just fall into the Dragonball cycle there. Take out one smart Titan and another stronger one rises up so gotta train the attack Titan to get stronger. I loved the series because it seemed to break some of the shonen tropes of the hero suddenly winning a losing fight because "no hurts my friends!" Sure they won some fights through ass pulls but they were usually immediately bitch slapped down.

I say better circumstances just due to the imagery of that guy walking in alongside his pet dog, as opposed to Ymir falling in from being chased by hunting dogs. I feel that parallel must account for something.

As for Eren, his sacrifice was to help his friends all live long peaceful lives, which he succeeded. He knew war would inevitably break out at some point, but he just wanted to keep his friends alive.

I thought the ending heavily implied that the Source Bug thing survived/continued on after he decomposed and grew into the same tree again, waiting to restart the cycle.

Behind the metric ton of racial and cultural politics it was basically Color Out of Space lol.

That was the point. It's part of the never ending cycle of violence. I can only assume that Eren took ymir's place so who knows what happens from there. Honestly no one really knows where it'll go from there. That's up isayama whether he wants to continue on himself or let someone else do it and draw residuals from use of the series name.
