The shadow realm is one of the few changes 4Kids made that actually made the show better.

The duel with Kaibas ghost comes to mind. In the Japanese version he was just some generic bad guy working for Pegasus, but in the NA version making him Kaibas doppelgnger made that duel have a shitton more meaning to the overall plot.

It's one of those things that to avoid the darkness known as death, they created something darker: purgatory.

As a kid, something like the shadow realm honestly sounds cooler than just death anyways.

Edit: In a way, some of the weird things in kids' television led to some cool, creative solutions. Like, to avoid saying "I will kill you," many kid tv shows used quite a few cool combination of words to say the same thing without using the word "kill."

Sometimes restrictions can lead to more creativity than flat out just being able to do anything.

I love when localisation accidentally makes it more metal.
I was thinking about how much cooler the Shadow Realm is than plain old death earlier this year when I saw a comparison of that Xenosaga scene with Albedo.
