From what I can tell by every bit of footage I've seen, this is a true paint-by-the-numbers remake. Like they've literally just taken the same exact game and given it relatively newish coat of paint. I'm not surprised its not being lauded as a masterpiece.

For videogames, it really isn't. Video game scores are super inflationary and the average score of an average game is higher than that of the average, say, movie. In gaming a 7 means mediocre or serious but not game-breaking issues. A 9-9.5 is a 'damn good' score at this point. 8 is 'fine'.

Is a 5/10 a failing grade or 'not bad, not great'? There's no central authority to point at to resolve this, and there are great reviewers doing serious work that use either scale.

How a medium's scores tend to look is influenced by many factors including from consumers, from industry and from critics themselves. Even if you think the typical 7/10 scored game on say metacritic should be scored higher or lower, that is de facto the scale in the medium.

In current games media? It must be absolutely awful. Games below a 70/100 are either garbage or do something against the reviewers agenda.

I'm curious if Nintendo is legally able to re-release the original unmodified. Those Woolseyisms may warrant royalties. If they have to do an overhaul of the game's dialogue, they might be better off just to update the game and re-release it.

Also, do re-releases have to go through a new ESRB review? If so, Valentina's boob jiggle would be enough to give the original a T for Teen rating. What isn't being ruined by capitalism or fascism is being ruined by "Won't somebody think of the children?" types.

Having played the original at release, it's like 7/10 at best.

FFIX is nowhere near that long. What the hell do you guys do, leave the game running? Even with 100%, it shouldn't take more than 30 hours. The early FF games are way shorter than people give them credit for. Do you realize how long 60 hours actually is in a game? If you spend more than half of that just beating the game, you're doing something horribly wrong.

Edit: I may be exaggerating slightly but yeah, 60 and especially 80 hours is *way* overshooting it. Even the Trails games, as big as they are, don't usually eclipse 70 or 80 hours and that's with side quests and talking to NPCs.

Game scores have been around for decades, and the way they're graded hasn't changed much. 1-3 has always been reserved for the creme de la crap of videogames. The Dr Jekyll/Mr Hydes, the ET's, the Ride to Hell Retributions. 4s were usually given to bad games that were still playable, and maybe still enjoyable to a niche audience. 5s were given to bad games that weren't bad enough to be given a 4. 6s were usually subjective. Some people enjoyed this type of game, while others hated it. But they weren't bad enough to the hater to be considered a bad game.

7s, I'll give you. This is usually considered an average game. Now the crux of this topic, 8s. You have some people trying to say this is average at best. That simply isn't true. It's considered good by critics, but because there are games considered masterpieces, it just didn't reach that pedestal. Finally, 9s and 10s. These are great games. That said, these are also games people like to call overrated. This is because not every game that gets these scores actually deserve to be in this spot. So if 9s and 10s can be considered overrated sometimes, it stands to reason that 8s can be considered underrated at times, especially something like Super Mario RPG, which received an 8 back then, but is very beloved, even now.

My first playthrough of FF9 was 25 hours and this was most optional stuff except Ozma because I couldn't be bothered with Chocobo H&C.

Chocobo H&C is way more tolerable on modern versions since you can increase your speed, and iirc it doesn't affect the minigame timer.

Now that I can agree on.

Seems like this game is made for those that really loved Mario RPG and those who missed out on it. I got about 75% of the way through so I might pick it up when it hits $40 in a year.

Every Mario game goes on sale for various holidays and sale events. Never goes below $40 for the most part tho

Once in a blue moon they do. Mario Odyssey actually was on sale for a short time last year.

You can get Mario Wonder on sale for 30 bucks.

hltb is saying main with sidequests is around 50 hours which is way more reasonable. aint nobody getting through that in 30 unless they avoid literally everything but the main story

That's bullshit. There are MANY 8/10s that are damn good games.

I think 8 works for "damn good." Higher than that you get into "great," then "damn great."

I like SNES games.

Not really. In video games a 9 means generic, uninspired gameplay, filled with bloat, and a big marketing budget. And a 7 can be anything from dog shit to a masterpiece.

I don't think FFIX even has that many side quests, much less enough to pad the game out for 50 hours.
