Probably because the pogo sword also has eyes, that are seemingly there for decoration.

Unless it's two living entities, and one of them is Clay and the other is Morton.

I always could see the eyes on the main body, but I thought those were like camouflage eyes, and the shells were its real eyes on stalks ( the wings were eyelashes )

but no, its just an Octorock floating with shells

ok I have beef with this remake now

just beat Belome. They changed his cool, ominous beware the flood line to something lame.

Game is definitely noticeably easier, but I do like how snappy battles feel now.

Very glad the script is 99% intact.

Yeah, that was a surprise! I NEVER made the connection between their differently patterned caps and archery targets before!

Another Monster List factoid, for Culex: He's not from Final Fantasy, he's from "Last Illusion". lmao

About five and a half hours in, just got the third star. It's a fun and colourful game with some actually funny writing. I love how Mario can be a huge dick and just go 'nah' when people ask for help. The fact you can just keep that one guy's wallet is hilarious. I can totally see how, if I'd played the original when I was a kid, I could latch onto this, but playing it for the first time now it's a bit... plain? Like, I can't see me having a reaction beyond 'that was neat' when I finish it.

I like the battles, even if they're on the easy side. The button timing stuff is a neat way to keep engaged through a lot of very similar battles and the random 'special' enemies who hit like a truck help keep the combat somewhat exciting.

Fuck Mallow though. And that stupid goomba pipe minigame.

the trick to the goomba pipe game is to bounce from goomba to goomba without landing on the ground. It's pretty easy to get 30+ points focusing on just doing that

also my favorite part about Asshole Mario was when you bring Geno back to the inn and talk to the kid again and he says something that makes Mario want to punch him in the face and Mallow has to hold his arm back while the conversation continues

Also I started last night and about to get the 4th star so yeah we'll just finish this whole thing in a weekend

Seconding the Octolok and Bowyer and Mack things. Mack I saw the guy up there but read the sword as the main thing.

I'm liking it! The bestiary motivates me to actually use Mallow and Thought Peek. (I'm SURE there was a better name they could've come up with, but at least they changed it) The Special Enemies are neat in a game that has become easier, although I do wish they got a new palette or something. It feels more Mario across the board now. I'm usually somebody who gets all purist about using the original graphics, but I like the graphical upgrades a lot.

The music's nice but it's odd that multiple songs have a "repeat the main phrase in a new key a couple times" just kinda shoved in there. Would've preferred a bit more one-to-one in that specific area.

Oh, yeah, collecting all the Thought Peek entries can make things kinda tough, especially in difficult boss battles (well, mainly Culex.) You also have to aware of form changes and tricks like that!

Another disturbing revelation from the Monster List (in Nimbus Land area): Dodo was adopted and raised by Valentina?! That's actually really sad to think about. I thought he was just some flunky.

man its crazy how busted the team attacks are since they didnt make the bosses any harder than the original

Knife Guy and Grate Guy fight went like this-

Turn 1: Thought Peek Knife Guy. He has 700 health, weak to fear and some element
-Terrorize them, do like 100 damage
- Mario/Mallow/Bowser team attack, do over 500 damage to both enemies

I almost didnt get to peek at Grate Guy because I nearly killed them both before Mallows second turn

Yeah, I don't really use the team attacks, except maybe to finish off a normal encounter quickly.

I do think all these new battle features probably help make the game bearable for kids who aren't familiar with RPG difficulty, kind of like how the original did for kids back in the day (for me personally this was the first RPG I really got into, and it helped kickstart me into getting more into the genre and trying the Final Fantasy games again). It feels like since games are easier since the SNES days, a game that was considered "a beginner's RPG" back then would feel much harder these days in comparison if they didn't change anything.

I've been thinking about replaying this again as soon as I finish, only to try it without equipment and seeing if how the difficulty works out that way. I feel like it'd be really fun to have to use Team Attacks, perfectly timed blocks, and make use of the new item limit to make up for lower stats. But I dunno how well that would work.

I often forgot to use team attacks haha. They're not really necessary most of the time anyway.

Except for the post-game bosses. That's when you really feel their impact.

Belome was easy and Bundt was fine once I got my setup right. Booster and Punchinello are gnarly. Booster would be okay until he decided to prepare and launch his train immediately, and you need to have those perfect guards down tight for Punchinello.

It really makes me want to try and go for a Super Suit, but I've never been able to do it.

It's partly luck-based. Sometimes he'd immediately attack before I even got a turn.

Yeah, Booster normally can have his train attack get interrupted by damaging him. Except for when he just says "Fuck you" and takes two turns in a row.

Loving the remake, and I can go with most of the renames, still don't like Frog Sage. That's like the name you'd find on a knockoff Frogfucious action figure

We lost "Frogfucious" but gained "Croaka Cola", which is a decent trade imo

ready for the final stage, beat Culex, got everything I can complete done for now

If you're using a pro controller make sure you plug it in and turn on the wired latency setting or whatever (why this is off by default I don't know). Made a big difference for me
