*Most extroverted asian students, I should say. Like the ones who hang out together in massive groups all the time.

I go to a University of California school so the Asian population here is about 44%. I totally can see why foreign students would stick with other foreign students, but often times Ill see Asian students that are California natives and they still hang out exclusively with other Asian students. No Black, White, Hispanic, etc.

And yes I think its odd when a diverse campus like this has all White friend groups and parties. But the difference in my area (since its very progressive in these parts) if youre not Asian you likely have no shot if getting to know these students any further than surface level through class interactions.

Just feels really cliquey but in a racial way. Ive made several Asian friends in school, even one of my former roommates is Taiwanese, and all of their social media is dominated by group pics with all Asian students. Makes my school feel real segregated despite the diverse student population.

a) Asian students often have a common culture, and shared 2nd-generation immigrant experience. It's a commonality that many white people don't share with other whites. The closest thing that white people might have would be Italian-American cliques, Irish-American cliques, or white-Hispanic cliques, etc.

b) Asian students are often excluded, or at least they FEEL that they are excluded from white people cliques, so they gravitate towards groups that openly accept them.

c) Asian children are often taught to act reserved and respectful. As such, numbers-wise, Asian children are less likely to initiate a friendship with other people. Therefore, unless a non-Asian student extends the olive branch, cliques don't often form between Asians and non-Asian.

d) Asian students are often taught by their parents to focus on academics and studies. Because of this, those 'Asian nerds' aren't typically the life of the party. As such, the 'cool, popular kids' don't often invite the 'nerds' into their cliques.

I am a research professor at a Japanese university. Guess what all the European students do? Hang out with each other.

And for that matter the Chinese, Korean, Thai, Indonesian, etc. students also all hang out with each other.

That's a little different, because neither Japanese, nor English are their first language. And their English is often not that great either. So those international students are naturally going to gravitate towards people who can speak their native language. At least most Europeans are decent at English as their second language, so they'll have an easier time hanging out with other Europeans of different nationalities.
