he deduced that my internet was too fast and that he needed to slow it down because it was confusing my modem
he put like 3 different splitters on the line because each time he put one on it was still too fast

finally he ended up going to his truck and just giving me a new modem because he couldn't slow it down enough
my speed test is showing a rate of >100mbps higher than what it typically was before (now 313mbps, was ~200mbps before)

i pay a premium for the highest speed they offer btw
idk shit about IT but this all sounds kinda sketch lol

it doesn't sound sketch, it is sketch. you're paying for the highest speed available, giving you a router capable of handling that should be the expectation and the first thing he did rather than trying methods to slow you down.

first he tried telling me that none of their equipment could handle speeds that high

If he's putting splitters on the coax, it sounds like he was over-simplifying an issue with the signal in the coax line. It is possible for the signal too strong or too weak causing issues with the modem.

However I don't think that really fits with just simply replacing the modem as being the fix too.

Difference between too strong a signal and too fast a throughput, the latter of which is probably exclusively an artificial problem, since it was plainly solved with a better router.
