I know this sounds like a wild conspiracy theory, but hear me out. What if the hateful trolls who spew racist, sexist, and homophobic comments about media are actually paid agents? Think about the consequences of their actions. They divert the attention from the legitimate criticisms and complaints of the fans who have genuine issues with the game or movie. They make it easy for the creators to dismiss any negative feedback as coming from bigots and haters. They also tarnish the reputation of the fandom by associating it with their vile views. I understand that horrible people and things exist. But I just made a post bout people attacking a newborn baby because of Abby. Like how can this happen on massive scale. That's crazy .

For example, look at TLJ. TLJ reduced the role of the first black lead in the Star Wars franchise, made him a comic relief, and ignored the romantic subplot that was hinted at in the previous movie. Even the actor himself expressed his disappointment. But instead of addressing these problems, some trolls started to rant about how the movie was too woke and SJW. They ignored the fact that the white male protagonist got the most favorable treatment in the movie. How does that make any sense? Unless they are plants.

It is just people with the time to spare that have deluded themselves into thinking they are high brow critics.

As someone that browses 4chan, I can assure you they are just a bunch of angry basement dwellers.

It would be an incredibly dumb waste of resources to hire people to talk shit about a product when people will do it for free

I don't think they're paid agents, but the media and studios definitely take advantage of the bigots and the psychos.

The 2016 Ghostbusters tried writing off every single critic as a woman hating bigot. Of course there were misogynists who crapped on the movie, but most of the criticisms were done because the trailer made the movie not look very good and the tone and humor clashed with what people expected. The movie itself showed most people's reactions were valid.

They aren't being paid, but the gist of what you're saying is absolutely correct, in that companies highlight a tiny percentage of comments in order to deflect criticism and provide "controversy" marketing.

The hubbub around the female Ghostbusters reboot made this super obvious.

This and in the process just come off more like assholes. Thats why I dont buy things like Death Threats being fan based claims and more just edgy people being dicks and the internet as a whole just looking to blame a group of people.

There was some article somewhere on the internet that discussed how Hillary hired trolls in the 2016 election cycle and I don't remember much about it but one part stuck out to me about how they were completely trashed because it was impossible to beat people who don't need to be paid to troll.

Seems a waste.

Theres no way that rival companies dont engage with it to some degree. Even if its a lone dev using alt accounts or a bot farm.
