While they are closed, you will make zero mistakes no matter the situation and mitigate the mistakes of others as much as possible. While your eyes are open, you have whatever driving ability you currently have.

What do you do?

If it counts as driving, you can do it. So long as you keep your eyes shut.

Would you really trust yourself to drive while sleeping? Who knows where youd wake up. Or what youd do cause you had some dream where you were racing.

You said we'd gain the ability to drive perfectly. That means there's no "who knows where you'd end up or what you'd do" because a perfect drive is getting to the intended destination safely in a timely matter.

So I don't have to deal with the sun in my eyes, limiting my driving hours due to night blindness, or the stress of constantly being on the lookout for the terrible drivers all over my city?

Where's the downside?

An intended destination includes whatever dumb things you decide while dreaming or being mostly asleep.

It is though.
If you were awake and halfway there decided youd rather go to Bville instead of Atown, youd see no problem with it. What makes it different if that happens while you are sleeping?

Ok, in your case at least, you cant and wont drive while sleeping. Since your definition of perfect driving requires awareness to move anywhere.

Wait, does your definition of "perfect driving" not include awareness or knowledge of how to get from Point A to Point B?

He is saying "yes you can drive safely while asleep. But it is possible that while asleep you think/dream of a different destination and end up going there instead of the destination you were thinking of before nodding off."

Side question: If you only close one eye, do you get perfect driving relative to things on that side of you, while still needing your own driving skill for dealing with stuff on the side with the open eye?

For the purpose of this topic? No. I mean you are driving with your eyes closed and therefore cant see anything. That right there cuts off a lot of awareness. So like you wont know where the other cars, people, etc are but youd also know you wont hit them.

No, my definition of perfect driving is getting from Point A to Point B safely and in a timely manner. I don't randomly decide to change my destination for shits and giggles halfway through, because I don't really enjoy commuting and would prefer being on the road as little as possible.

Which is why your "well if you're sleeping who knows where you'll end up!" caveat does not jive with perfect driving.

Yeah I get that, and it's stupid, because if I end up somewhere I didn't intend, that's not perfect driving.

But if you're driving via The Force then you don't really need that awareness of where everybody is anyway, since you've already established that you're driving perfectly and won't be the direct cause of an accident / can mitigate accidents caused by others.

"Making zero mistakes" in the OP also implies that your sense of direction and location is also flawless, since missing a turn would by definition be making a mistake while driving. You basically have the world's best GPS mode enabled the second you shut your eyes so there shouldn't be any reason why you can't use this power to navigate to a place, even one you've never been before.

The topic is giving you perfect driving skills, but otherwise isnt changing anything about how you work. Maybe you would stay on task if sleeping, maybe you wouldnt. Thats not something Im going to make assumptions on.

Ill give everyone two options. One is where you wont drive while sleeping and will safely exit the travel lane to park if you fall asleep. The other is full ability to drive while sleeping, but your unconscious self might make decisions you wont like.

If you trust yourself or are willing to take the risk, take the 2nd option. Otherwise take the first.

Anyways, this topic is supposed to be about how would you use this, not going deep into details about how it works, what is the definition of perfect etc.
