That movie bangs.

It's literally just every ridiculous spy movie turned up to 11 in the best way.

Also Bryce Dallas Howard is gorgeous

Trailers made it seem like another F-grade Netflix action movie that likely turned alot of people off.

Should've just made another Kingsman movie with Cavill as a lead or bad guy

Oh man I was looking forward to that movie. Was hoping it would be as surprisingly funny and entertaining as 2015's Spy if anyone remembers that movie.

Bryce Dallas Howard... gorgeous? The daughter of the guy who narrated arrested development?

I know it's hated right now, but I actually kinda feel like it could become a cult classic like maybe 20 years down the line.

It had some bad effects, and it didn't quite match how I thought the trailer pointed it as being, but I enjoyed it. I think, in 20 years, when people won't judge the effects of today too harshly since many things will look outdated, that won't really be a criticism anymore. The movie won't have too much hype behind it, so people who go in will probably feel like it was better than they expected, and eventually said it was an underappreciated gem.

I think it was a solid 6/10, but I don't feel like I wasted my money seeing it in theaters.

Eh, I don't think it's too bad of judgment as a whole. I don't think bad products are necessarily bad choices such as Superman and The Witcher since the upside was pretty big. I would say Superman ended up giving him a pretty good fanbase for an actor all things considered, and the pay was probably pretty good too. Mission Impossible was a beloved role of his, so I think he can make a good transition to either hero or villain roles, so that shouldn't restrict him too much.

I would have to say Argylle had people saying they were hoping he was in it more, so that can't ever be a bad thing imo if that's what people's overall opinions are (along with Cena). I wonder if the Apple paycheck was shared amongst the actors too since that would have boosted his pay for this role as well.

I was curious how the film was going to do. It seems to go out of its way to get everybody.

  • we have comedy
  • we have action
  • we have romance
  • we have spy intrigue
  • we have sexy, beautiful people
  • we have a funny meme-worthy cat mascot
I wasn't rooting for the film. I wasn't rooting for it to fail. I'm just sitting on the sideline with curiosity as to how well "Let's appeal to everyone" was going to work.

Saw it.

A no-spoilers review below.

It was a cute wink and a nod to spy movies that involve normal people. Nothing that hasn't been done before. It was fun.

Then comes the twist about where all her Tom Clancy-level knowledge about spycraft comes from. Okay. Been done. Wasn't totally unexpected, but it's still salvageable.

Then, there's the twist of a twist when they get the McGuffin. Now this shit is wearing really thin. Too many twists and it's just... silly. Even if it gives the characters narrative permission to finally thwart the bad guys... it was just so unnecessary.

And the last action montage sequence... Jesus Christ... where the movie loses any semblance of being a clever genre flick and we get something that's akin to a final showdown that would be more at home in Ryan Reynold's Free Guy. But it works for Reynolds' movie, and not for Argylle. You just kind of check out at the absurdity as the mask comes completely off that they're not trying anymore.

It wants to be 1991's If Looks Could Kill, if the main character was Tom Clancy instead of a teenager. Which is fair enough, as that's a watchable but mostly forgettable genre mash-up send-up. Like Argylle. Or like it was supposed to be.

Some of the set pieces are lovely to look at and kind of save it overall. Cranston is a stand-out who has wholly embraced the villain role he perfected in Breaking Bad and then chews scenery like he just got his taste buds back for the first time after chemo ended at a Chinese buffet. Everyone else is serviceable in their roles, but no one really delivers a performance I'd note as stand-out. Only one actor phones it in I guess because he's earned the privilege of doing that? But I think the role was wasted on him when you could have dragged an older, angrier Gene Hackman out of retirement to do it better, but this film would probably be a waste of his time, talent, and comedy chops, too, truth be told...

At the end of the day, it's like a lot of genre satires, there's something missing in its heart that makes greatness slip through its fingers. It could have leaned in to the dark and violent satire like Long Kiss Goodnight, but doesn't. It could have been a more cloying and heartfelt satire like The Replacements. But it also doesn't.

Bottom line is that it's a good-enough film. You'll get the most for your money out of it if you see it as a matinee with something from the concession stand, or if you go post-matinee and wait to eat until after you leave the theater.

I liked the movie. Wasn't bored at all, very entertained all the way through. It was not a serious movie at all. Plenty of campy spy moments, nothing truly original but not in a bad way. 7.5/10

In love since The Village and before.

And Argylle might be the best/funniest movie I might actually go watch in a while. Although Poor Things wasn't that bad. But yeah judging from the worst criticism about it, it sounds pretty good.

I'm really surprised this has been getting such a visceral reaction from people (who didn't see it). The trailer looked like a lot of fun and I thought most people liked Vaughn pretty well. But now every smart ass is acting like they knew it was going to be a flop and are glad it is for some reason.

The movie was fun as hell. Not as good as Kingsman but I would easily recommend it to anyone who liked those movies. It's funny, has fun characters, a good silly spy plot, and great action (although not as much as I would have liked). Also, BDH is thicc as fuck. No idea why random internet people are throwing this in the "killed my dog" pile.
