Back in my younger days I played several magic tournaments, and won a couple. Never for cash though, it was always something like a box of 4th edition for the winner, and booster packs for 2nd and 3rd.

I used to play in the various ones gamestop would be hosting during various events leading up to a midnight release. They were never for money though, just whatever posters/other promotional things they'd have in the store.

I played in a halo 2 free for all thing (leading up to halo 3's midnight launch), a gears of war 2 1vs1 tournament set in the avalanch map (leading up to gears of war 3's midnight launch. This one was wack since despite being mad confident in my gears of war skill this was just basic, unpatched gears of war 2 which was mad janky. The guy I was against was eating mad gnasher shots), smash brothers brawl leading up to smash 4/wii u's release, and a tekken 5 dark resurrection setup.

There was no scene for cash, but I did get the massive esteem of wide recognition that I was the single best CS player at my school.

Yes. There was a midnight release tournament for Brawl when it came out, and I won :D

My friends had been playing the Japanese version for a while though, so we kinda had a slight advantage :3
