Did it on AOL over an instant message once. It was mostly them breaking up with me though.

I broke up with my girlfriend just out of high school during a WoW dungeon we were playing together. Though, in fairness, she had broken up with me the day before and it was time for her scheduled "I want to be with you, can we get back together?" routine after she had calmed down.

It happened a lot and I finally said no, because holy shit she made me miserable 40% of the time.

First major breakup was over IM, second was over the phone.

Once. Maybe the lady was in the right. She wanted to sleep together, but wouldn't wanna go out together and stuff.
I tried to plan to meet her to break up, but it just wouldn't happen. Eventually i had to tell her over the phone which upset her, but I told her i was trying hard to see beforehand...

Don't know. She never told me why. And I haven't heard from her since 2001. The break up was in 1998. This was a long time ago.

I broke up with an adult in my thirties girlfriend over the phone. She is the only woman in my adult life I ever broke up with (other relationships for me the women have ended them.) We had been going out about 4 months and it was getting serious. I panicked and caught her unexpectedly. I am not proud of my choice back then. I owed it to her face to face.

Mostly in person. Once over the phone, but it didn't take, so it had to be in person, multiple times, and eventually a restraining order.

In high school it was usually getting some other girl to tell me. Adult I've never officially had a breakup. Sometimes people just drift apart.

Always in person.

It was a complicated internal to me issue mainly. She wanted kids and I knew that. I was ok with that at first. She also didn't really want to leave the area we both lived in at the time.

Around the time I broke up with her, I was having a crisis at work and I started feeling overwhelmed by alot of things. She was 27 and just was finishing a graduate degree. I was 33. I was worried I couldn't give her the things she wanted and I justified not talking about my stresses and worries by thinking I was protecting her. I worried about having kids and I worried alot about moving since work at the time was tough.

Figured breaking up would do her a favor and she could move on. Talking about my problems still could of lead to a breakup because there might not have solutions to please us both but I never gave that possibility a chance.

I did end up transferring to another city. She ended up starting a family a year or so after our relationship ended.

I learned an important lesson though to always talk about your stresses with significant others and playing a martyr is just a justification for avoidance.
