An easy example is Mario RPG. So many times I am just never feeling the lead character.

Agreed. I get that they're supposed to be there for the story. Just put them in the cutscenes and let me bench them anyway.

What RPGs don't force you to play the main character? All I can think of if FF6 because some argue it doesn't have a main character (even tho it's totally Terra)

Quite a few don't. Heck, you brought up FFVI, but the vast majority of the series that has more than one party's worth of characters let you not run around with the main character.

Playing as Mario is kinda the whole point of it being a Mario game

Common sense says it may not taste good, but it'll make a turd.

FFX lets you swap out Tidus when you have more than three party members. Of course there are plenty of times when the characters you have to choose from are limited, but as long as you have access to four characters in a fight, you aren't forced to keep any of them out.

Pokeymans never forces you to send out your starter once you catch something else.

you can choose a different party member to speak to others in Baldur's Gate 3, which helps if your main has low charisma.

but you can't choose a different party member to speak to another companion, which I don't like.

Just throwing this out there.

How is a main character a main character if you dont have to use him/her?

The main character is the person who is the lens of the story is told through. Whether or not they are in your battle party is irrelevant as the entire system is just a semantic way to represent everyone fighting. If the world were a real thing you wouldn't have 3/4 people fighting and the rest just nonstop masturbating when you are running around: it would be everyone fighting.

Being forced to play as Mario is why I never used Bowser in Mario RPG, even though I wanted to. They kind of have the same overall party role.

They all force you to play as the main character in some way, but there's plenty that allow you to control party members outside of combat. Just to name a few off the top of my hesd.

- Baldur's Gate 3 (even allows you to have parry members talk to major NPCs in place of your main character).
- Divinity Original Sin 2 (same deal as BG3).
- Tales of Arise (I think you can even swap out the main character out of the party if you wanted). Don't know if it's the same for other Tales games.
- KotoR 1 and 2 (although it defaults back to your character when you talk to NPCs).

Chrono Cross: "You can have up to 40 different characters to choose from in your 3-member party!"
Player: "Cool! That means I can swap out the main character for battles, right?"
Chrono Cross:"..."

I've played tons of Tales games and never swapped out the main character because I assumed you couldn't. >_>
