Sure when i was a teen i thought it was cool but every since i grew out of the Saw watching days, the gore dont draw me to it anymore.

So im actually surprised that it feels like im in the minority that Mortal Kombat is still so popular and that its not a niche game anymore.

iirc, some of the developers ended up getting PTSD due to the research they did for the fatalities and gore for the latest games in the series.

I haven't played a mortal kombat game since deadly alliance.
Admittedly, I'll occasionally check out the fatalities on youtube just to see how creative/far they've gotten. Some of them are pretty wild even by my standards, and I even kind of find it funny that there's almost no uproar about them thesedays considering the shit they went though in the 90s.

Mortal Kombat gore was fine when it was a 2d sprite exploding into ten ribcages.

I heard this was the case for MK 11. Some developers stated that they often spent hours looking at photos of suicides and violent car accidents.

that's really messed up :/

MK lost its novelty for me by MK2. Personally, I found the controls to be worse than SSF2, Fatal Fury 2/Special, AOF, and Samurai Shodown. Also, I prefered Capcom and SNK's graphics.

That's sad to hear. From a mental health perspective, I think there should be some type of regulation that can't force someone not in a career that would be on-site or dealing with the physical body after such incidents to view those kids of images and videos. I'm sure there's simulations out there that can be done so that the imagery of the simulation isn't close to real life or inspiration could be drawn from overly gory movies, since I Mortal Kombat still embraces the ridiculous, over-the-top, death-metal-album-cover style gore.

I can't even watch streams of the newer games in the series, much less play them myself. I tried, but found myself wincing any time even just xray attacks came up.

I'm just staying away from it now. The push towards realism for how frequent and extreme it is really turns me off and it's not something I want to desensitize myself to.

i think they really just got too carried away. the xrays, the fatalities... the brutality of it all is lost when it's so cartoonish and repetitive. getting treated to multiple 30-second long cutscenes of getting your brain stabbed clean through, your back broken and your liver ripped out and blown up with a fireball and somehow you're still alive through all that, only to then get finished off in the 30 second cutscene where they launch you into space and yeet you into a black hole... it's just like, dude, ok.
