Definitely way more fun in a crew of people you know and talk with, but yeah I've had a lot of fun moments with randoms and solo sailing too.
When I'm solo I mostly just sail around looking for other crews to mess with. Like I'll see a boat docked at an island and they're all off doing whatever their quest is so I'll hop aboard, raise the anchor, and sail it away from the island before jumping off.
