Depends on the game, but I don't like it in "core" games that already have an established setting and all that. Mortal Kombat has intentionally gone the route of "hey remember this 80s/90s action star" and that's fine, but I didn't like seeing Akira in SFV. Not that I played SFV, because it sucked.

That being said, I'll always prioritize moveset over aesthetic: If the character is fun to play, I'd rather keep them. Rather have them reskinned, but still.
