I've got P5R collecting hypothethical digital dust at my Steam Library, not sure if I should start with that.

Starting with newer stuff will guarantee that you have trouble doing the older stuff

You want to sell P5R and play a REAL SMT game.

Well now that 3 is remade there is no reason to play it first. Nocturne though, it has the best story.

All the main games are 99% separate anyway. I myself started with P4 (hence why I have the MC as my profile pic). However, I saw no real issues aside from not knowing a specific place being referenced at the time lol. And as others have said, P3 Reload exists now, so the game play from P5 to it isn't that much different now. (Though I still say P3 FES/Portable are still worth playing through for certain character voice work).

Since you're unsure whether you'll like this series or not, I say just start with what you got already and make your way from there.

Note, I'm just meaning Persona. I just never could get into SMT enough to even try it lol.

I feel like, since you already have P5R, you should just start with that.

it might make going back to the older games more difficult due to it having some QoL improvements, but they're remaking some of the games, so you should be okay.

and SMTV is becoming multiplat later this year.

Mt first Persona game was the P1 remake for the PSP and I enjoyed it but it certainly isn't for everyone since it's very archaic in design like very high random encounters. Persona 3 reloaded is pretty sweet and pretty accessible.
