You kidding? There's people constantly saying that oblivion is superior to Skyrim for one stupid reason or another. It's a great game, don't get me wrong, but grow with the times man. Accept that the next instalment of a franchise is going to keep some things, drop some things, and upgrade the rest.

Oblivion is trash compared to Skyrim. Can't even play for an hour without my save file getting corrupted.

Oblivion at least has color to it. Skyrim, on the other hand, came out right in the middle of the brown and grey era of video games, and it really shows.

I still find it super fun and am actually replaying it.

Recently had the animation-bomb glitch kill a file that was 216hrs through, feels like I barely did anything other than max out most of my skills, stats, and getting to lv 40 which was my goal before I started closing oblivion gates, so now I gave myself a break and am replaying it.

Lol, I WISH it was that cool. It is kind of "cool" (for whatever that can mean to a file you can no longer play) in that the colors of the world seem to change. It's hard to describe, however when I finally gave up I had fast traveled to Lewayiin Castle and the visuals seemed to "pop". The burning fires stop animating which is the first clue, and doors that don't trigger a loading screen open at such a slow frame rate that they don't seem to open at all.

Heh, and here I thought I was the only person on gfaqs to put enough hours into my Oblivion playthroughs to regualrly get the Glitch of Doom.

I was unhealthily obsessed with Oblivion for years, but I haven't gone back to it since Skyrim released. There's a number of reasons for this, but chief among them is that, no matter how much I may have preferred certain aspects of Oblivion, Skyrim does not have the threat of the Glitch of Doom hanging over every playthrough, and is thus the preferred experience.

Well, it's probably not getting new players very often these days, and every one who already liked it has discussed it to death. A ton of people still like it, there's just not much left to say.

Oblivion is talked about a lot. Not as much as Skyrim or Morrowind, but a lot of people played it. I guess it's kinda basic compared to those two (Morrowind with its unique and developed region and Skyrim being, well, Skyrim) so there's not that much discussion to be had in comparison.

Oblivion NPC memes will always be funny tho.

My biggest gripe with Skyrim, in relation to Oblivion, is that you're the main character; the chosen one. In Oblivion you're supporting cast to the main character. I find that more interesting narratively, and also more fun mechanically. I can ignore Oblivion's main quest and venture off to be whatever I want in the world. In Skyrim if I want to do that I have to be aware of what to specifically avoid, lest I accidentally set things in motion. It's just a personal feel thing.

Also, as someone else said, Oblivion feels better color-wise. The world is more fun to exist in.

Skyrim is the best experience from a design standpoint. Morrowind has the best writing for its world and most interesting setting. Oblivion has the best side quest chains and is the most unintentionally funny.

I put 400 hours into one oblivion save file and 200 something on another and never got that glitch of doom.

What did happen is that both eventually got the bug where they run out of unique IDs so all items would disappear when stored.

What you could carry was the only working inventory space.

Never felt the need to sink so much into skyrim.

The colors and built up areas really are what does it. I would spend hours and hours roaming around doing random shit/collecting everything.

Skyrim is white, gray, and Viking huts (sometimes with exquisite version!). (Markarth is cool, and riften has just enough with the thieves guild to feel slightly built up I spend most of my time there)

Honestly in oblivion though, I would move into an area set up a local house and just spend the next 20-40 hours doing everything in/around/involving a major city. It felt like a game that rewarded you for spending a lot of time in an area as well.

I would probably still be playing it if my two previous attempts at a complete file hadnt crashed and burned. If you are going to make a game people can spend a thousand hours on, make sure its fucking mechanically possible.

Anyway that was way more than I intended to write and now I have an odd mix of nostalgia and the ghosts of old gamer rage.

They're all beautiful in their own right. The Cyrodilic cities vary in design based off their location and each have their own vibe. Then you've got the giant wheel of the Imperial City which gives an authentic "Empire Capitol" feel.

It's also nice just running along the countryside because that degree of greenery isn't really in Morrowind or Skyrim, though there are parts of Skyrim with greenery, it's not the same.

The end of the Guild questlines also have some of the best rewards compared to other games.

Being Brotherhood's Listener allows for weekly collection of money and regular communication with the Night Mother herself (I also liked where that questline goes and the role you play post Cheydinhal Sanctuary part (that part actually makes me fucking sad, especially since you have to personally carry it out yourself)).

The end of the Mage's Guild questline in addition getting the archmage room & staff also allows for a sizable pool of followers, you get the Staff of Manimarco which revives corpses for a minute and makes them fight for you. Killing a bandit and then forcing them to serve you in death is a rather perverse pleasure, ngl.

Fighter's Guild leadership is basic and kinda lame, however it's like that in all of the games. It's the least interesting Guild questline to complete, however I do like the whole Fighter's vs Blackwood Company aspect.

In the Thieve's Guild you get the Cowl of the Gray Fox, which is a legendary and super useful item, one of the most OP items ever made in ES. You get to actually keep the Skeleton Key as a reward from Nocturnal instead of needing to return it to become Theive's Guildmaster in Skyrim. And if you properly prepare you can even keep the Boots of Springheel Jack, which I try to always do because it gives like +50 Acrobatics when you wear them.

I haven't played Oblivion for a very good while until the last 3 months or so, talking at least a decade or more, however I'm falling in love with the experience all over again and even after suffering a heart wrenching, file destroying bug, I found myself still wanting to play after playing a different game for a few weeks.

Back when it first came out I had multiple files that were easily 400+ hrs and never encountered the Animation bomb. When it first started to happen to me recently I thought it was actually the Thieve's Guild questline glitching as I was going through the Blind Moth Temple.

I get that and do love me some Skyrim. Overall I'm sure I've played it more than Oblivion.

It was actually your post that informed me about the glitch. I thought it was the Thieve's Guild questline bugging, but nah.

I'm especially salty over the fact that it's supposed to be something more common for files with far more hours and I just drew the unlucky straw at 216hrs.

Also, this.

Working your magic skills is perhaps the easiest and most convenient in Oblivion. You can make super ineffectual spells that serve no purpose other than using the least amount of mana to work the skills. Never running out of magicka means running along and constantly just casting.
