I mean. I'd like to say its not a hot take to say that when you give people new accessible tools to break laws they will break said laws more and society should adjust to fix it but...

AI image generation is getting better and better and is unregulated. It took effort and money back in the day to photoshop stock images to be purposefully misleading. Now you just need to keep writing prompts until you get something passable

even video AI is getting better and better and I dont see any major movements to limit it. It will only get worse and thats a legit concern

we are in for several years of low effort scams and grifts, more than we ever thought possible. Yes, board 8 is full of people who are going to be harder to fool, but theres already plenty of examples of the most vulnerable people in society falling for Nigerian prince scams. Imagine given the people willing to do that even more tools that are more convincing and in some cases free

No way, fool has probably just been so insanely lucky with every fast food order he's ever placed looking just like the ads that he believes all advertisements. It's a blessing and a curse

I dont think its as bad a take as some say tbh. When scams are harder to do people do those scams less, making laws less necessary.

Problem is, this doesn't pass even a 5 second smell test.

Look at the example you're using to come to this conclusion. A tiny single day event event that even if done "properly" would've been super mediocre. No one heard of it until well after it happened. Maybe thousands of dollars spent on tickets total.

Compare to Fyre Festival, which had months of top-tier advertising, even your mom heard of it. People wasted millions on it. It literally starved its guests and nearly killed them.

Fyre happened many years before generative AI, and Wonka happened about 2 years after AI advanced far enough to create those fake images and stories (I know the ads used DALLE3 but you could get similar looking images with Stable Diffusion 1, and text with GPT3).

So how can look at an event that's not even 1/1000th as bad as Fyre, and it took over 2 years of the tech being open to billions just to generate ONE decent twitter-threadable scam, and then conclude that OBVIOUSLY scams are getting worse and more common?

It makes no sense and shows lack of understanding in the tech and especially the economics of scams. It's some sort of wishful thinking or confirmation bias that gen AI is the one true destroyer of our society, if only we stopped it we'd be back to "normal" (aka 2021, the best year ever).

I think it's fine to say both "AI is becoming a problem for scams" and "AI was not the main problem with this particular scam"

That means you think it's fine to say anything you feel like, regardless of proof or reason. You would think that someone worried about AI exponentially accelerating misinformation would raise their standards, not lower them.
