There's going to be a shift where people simply stop buying it, I assume. I've already stopped buying fast food, it's simply not worth the cost anymore.

I think McDonald's specifically was intentionally seeing what the market would bear.

Got a foot long for 10 bucks last month. I was shocked to find the new meat actually does taste better. Still not great but good in a pinch

That was posted in response to a comment claiming that salaries are incredibly low here. I was just pointing out that generally they arent for westerners.

But hey, carry on being wilfully ignorant if it pleases you.

We get Subway coupons in the mail every month. Three footlongs for $19 or two for $13 are the best.
I can't imagine ever paying full price for their food.
I'm also wondering what are they buying. The most expensive sub is around $10. I also think it's regional. Say you buy one on the NE or the West coast it will cost more because it cost more to run a business. Remember they use a franchise model.

Theyre also not the target demographic for McDonalds. Its not a particularly complicated issue. McDonalds isnt the standard for fast food here, as Ive stated several times. Its for homesick westerners, so their salaries matter more than those of locals.

If you want to compare fast food prices to the salaries of locals, then its fairer to compare to things like the cheapest pho, banh mi and bun cha. Then theres a whole stage between those and McDonalds, with things like Lotteria and Bonchon.

But of course, this has already been made fairly
clear and youre just looking for an argument.

I went back to America for a week last year in November to attend a conference. The price of food is truly nuts. I don't think I would eat out anymore if I still lived there.

Same here. Went to taco bell. What happened to getting a taco for like 80 cents? I thought Japans 2-300 taco was nuts.

Didnt go to any fast food chains during my trips to Japan, but I was pleasantly surprised by food costs. Id been warned that theyd be really high but I don't think they were for the most part.

EDIT: actually, I did have KFC Christmas. Was shit and expensive.

I keep hearing Americans say that food prices in Japan are high and I think it's another one of those stereotypes from a different time like the unusually long work hours and high suicide rate. It was true decades ago, but it's certainly not true now.

But in general I think fast food here in Japan is overpriced and certainly not worth the price. This is because you can get quality food at a real restaurant for as less. Just not much incentive to spend more for some junk. China is even worse. McDonald's and KFC is like a luxury meal there, total waste of money.

I can literally buy enough bread, meat, and cheese to just fucking make those sandwiches, along with some sides to top it, for marginally more than that.

And by that I mean make the sandwiches every day for like a week, versus one sandwich there.

Mdonalds and KFC, Pizza Hut, and especially Dominos are overpriced here. KFC is terrible here and costs so much. A large pizza at Dominos (like the same size as a medium in the US?) is almost 3000.

A regular Japanese restaurant is super cheap.

These tourists also go to tourist trap areas in Tokyo, so yeah they get the expensive stuff.

Also cook your own food, its cheaper and takes as much time as it does to drive to the place, get mad, and come back home.

If you grew up in abject poverty in rural China in the 70s then fast food is a status symbol and sign of prosperity. A lot of other people in Asia have similar views. For Japanese, I have no idea why they pay so much for that shit.

Its kind of crazy I can order food from a really nice restaurant for pick up up and can get some meals that barely cost more than fast food. The only disadvantage is it will be a bit slower, but the food quality is leaps and bounds better. 10-15ish years ago fast food had the huge advantage of being way cheaper. I wonder if we will reach a breaking point or if people addicted to fast food keep it going.

They also cover up the food so you can't see it being made anymore. Coincidentally this coincides with the Subway family selling the company last year.

I've noticed the smaller portions as well lately, and now with covering up the food you can't even be like "could you add a bit more"?

I dont believe this. Unless they changed everything, they would charge extra for anything besides veggies. And I visited home and went to a Subway, where they didnt cover anything. Maybe this was just your local Subway?

it seems to be how they are trending but not all have converted i think. of my local subways (there are like 7 or 8 i think) like 4 of them have converted to the non see through counter while one still has the traditional see through glass.

Nutrition aside, I could nearly live off convenience store food there lol. I absolutely love the 7-11 egg salad sandwiches that were just a couple hundred yen or so, as well as the tuna/mayo musubis. Back in Hawaii basically the only way to get a similar egg sandwich is from Mana Sandwiches and theyre $6.75 D:

And unfortunately a Mana Sandwiches just opened up near my workplace and I started buying 2 a day for lunch which is gonna cost a lot in the long run because I have no self control :<

Subway is outrageously priced for what you get. Their food is rhe definition of buyers remorse, I feel weird and stupid after eating a footlong. I eat there maybe 4x a year just to remind myself it's still terrible.

Those footlong pretzels are pretty on point though

I was talking to the workers there, specifically the manager and from what she said that is gonna be the standard moving forward. Maybe your Subway doesn't haven't yet, but give it time.

Also, even before this I've noticed they were putting less food on the subs as well.
