I raised my rank in Queen's Blood. I think I kinda have the hang of how it works now. It seems like it could be fun as you get more cards. At least games are fast!

There are 20+ mini-games in FFVII Rebirth (no exaggeration) and I think Queen's Blood is one of the best, even if more on the complex side.

The original FFVII loved random minigames, too, so I'm glad to see Rebirth has preserved the spirit of the original in that regard...!

I loved the variety, but it's so out of step with modern AAA design that the critical reaction have been qutie interesting to see.

Edit: One thing to consider is whether to turn off some of the HUD elements when you're in the world map to make it a bit less "gamey" and more immersive. I did this about half-way through and really started to enjoy the exploration a lot more afterward. Found the radar quite distracting.

So Johan and Wolf aren't best buds after all, huh. It feels like Johan makes it his goal to make anyone who helps him regret it.

Have they explained Johan's philosophy?

I don't think we've had any detailed explanation of that yet, no.

I made it to around episode 35 and I don't think I'd seen anything about that either.

I'm the weird guy who found Johan himself boring though so it's entirely possible I tuned it out

Can't wait for the chocobo hot and cold remake

One of the minigames uses Chocobo Hot and Cold elements! It's not as fun, though, since it's a lot more basic.

I think I'm almost done with Chapter 2 of Rebirth. I'm just doing side content before I head to the Mythril Mines.

I enjoyed Kalm. It's got a nice small town feel to it, and I like that they're making the affection point system an important part of character interaction, even in battle. I'm always down for affection points. The Folio System feels like another Sphere Grid spinoff but simpler.

Chocobos are fun. I'm glad we get access to them early, especially now that we have a wide area to search for all the side content.

My favorite interaction so far:

Barret: Where have you two been?!

Aerith (grabbing Cloud's arm): On a date! Kind of.

Tifa: Wha...?

Aerith and Tifa's interactions are always great.

I'm at the point where I assume affection will become most relevant very soon and I'm looking forward to it a lot.

Yeah, I figured we'd get access to the chocobos relatively quickly since the Chocobo Ranch was the next location after Kalm in the original game, so I didn't go too far out of my way until I got there.

Also, I'm kinda glad they simplified weapons in this game. I didn't need a Crystarium for all my weapons in Remake, so just having a bonus ability and skill associated with each weapon is good enough for me.

I feel like I'll be in a dilemma since I like Tifa more but prefer the Aerith date

I try to get best interactions with everyone but it will also break my heart if it's not Tifa.

Good news: the Tifa date's better than the Aeris date this time (I say as an Aeris fan).

Only the second Elite Eight for the men's program.

Never made it to the Final Four. I still remember that loss to Michigan State the first time we made the Elite Eight. I was listening to the game on the radio on my way back to college from spring break, and we lost on a last second shot.

I like how each sidequest in Rebirth involves another character alongside Cloud for additional banter and development. Really nice touch.

Whew, finally got 100% World Intel for the Grasslands! Enjoyed the Midgarsormr (I wonder what the ASCII version would be. Sormry?) fight.

It's interesting that they show Sephiroth killing it in a surreal way. Like, was he really there? If not, what actually happened? How else could it have gotten impaled on the tree like that? How did Cloud get out of the swamp? So many mysteries!

The real question is, who killed Midgar Zolom in the original FF7? Since Sephiroth's in the Northern Crater the whole game...

Also it's probably not worth thinking about solutions to those "mysteries" you proposed. The game never goes back to any of them, haha.

Well, in FFVII, it's Jenova taking on Sephiroth's form, as it presumably is here, too. It's just hard to tell here how much of it is real and how much of it is in Cloud's head.

FFVII Rebirth Chapter 3 complete!

Mythril Mines was a pretty fun location. I enjoyed the boss fight against Rude and Elena. The dialogue and the banter continues to be great.

Rude and Elena are very good in Rebirth. I didn't like the Turks at all in Remake (and didn't really care for them in the original), so it's a nice change of pace. This game having less Reno helps too, since he's always been the lamest of them.

Reno is the worst and the Compilation trying to redeem him was always odd. Remake showing again how much he actually sucks was great.

Reno is good! Rude is my favorite of the bunch, but they're all good to varying degrees, even Elena!

Elena is great in Rebirth! Possibly the best of the Turks.

I'm amazed you liked Reno in Remake. He's almost as evil as Hojo there.

I mean he was pretty evil in the Midgar part of the original too!

Renos absence in Rebirth is a bummer imo. I feel like the Turks all work best as a unit, but they do a good job with just Rude and Elena.

He might not even be back in FF7R3, since his screentime was reduced due to his Japanese VA dying.

It wouldn't take much effort to scrub Reno from what's left because it's not like he does anything essential after Midgar.

I'd hate to see them do it, but it'd be pretty easy.

Man, new Fort Condor sucks

Just the simple change of making where you can place your units based on enemy movement instead of ally movement makes the game way worse

Made it to Junon in Rebirth. Wow, Square, how could you deprive me of my CPR minigame? Also, hiring Yuffie to assassinate Rufus and paying it off with the party's bounties? Is Yuffie telling the truth or just bluffing? I guess we'll find out!

Posting this Fort Condor strategy in here for myself later when I need it. I'll put it in spoilers just in case.

Take the set-up with 2 Balistas and 3 medics

As soon as the game starts you counter the first enemy unit on the side it will spawn

Once your unit has advanced a bit you put your Balista right in front of the enemy base and then you put medics and finally another Balista

You spam countering units near it whenever your medics/balistas are threatened and you clean up with champion units

The key is to put your units in the middle so that they will attack the main base so you wont waste any time

Enjoy free win.

Worth noting Fort Condor also has a hard mode you can do later. It's not worth doing unless you really enjoy the game, since the rewards are pretty miniscule and it doesn't count towards completion.

It does count towards completion. Rewards are indeed miniscule though, but you're not getting 100% without it.

Ah, I meant World Intel. Didn't realize there was another completion marker. It takes a few hundred hours to get the plat though, so I assume Leon won't go for that.

Yeah that's true. World Intel is a very high amount of that though.

Yeah, I had no delusions that I'd be getting the Platinum for this game, haha.

All World Intel data gathered for the Junon region! I can confirm that the Fort Condor strategy I posted above does indeed work, so that lessened my annoyance considerably! Not even going to touch the hard mode on this one.

I preferred the Intermission simply because this one is much more a race against tie than anything. Though it's not difficult if you have the right strategy to pull it off.

Yeah, the fact that you auto-lose if time runs out is another bad change to the game.

I am now in Upper Junon in Rebirth. We meet Glenn Lodbrok, whom I've been told is from that Ever Crisis game. To me, he looks like the newest member of Organization XIII and he just showed up in the wrong game. He apparently works for Wutai, and he offers some thinly veiled threats to Rufus. I'm hoping the game will eventually give some background at some point and not just assume we all played Ever Crisis!

Upper Junon is really good. Some excellent stuff in that stretch.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Chapter 4 complete!

The Upper Junon stuff was indeed very good. I dominated the parade, naturally. And even more naturally, Yuffie gets in the way of our deal with Rufus (although Barret says we're better off not striking any sort of deal with Shinra, not even a "I won't bother you if you don't bother me" one). I do like Rufus's characterization so far, so I'll be curious to see where they take it from here.

I enjoyed the rematch with Roche. Wonder if cutting his motorcycle in half at the end was meant to be a callback to Advent Children's over the top action, which is befitting someone as over the top as Roche. Also, I had a random thought regarding the Seventh Infantry dudes that follow Cloud around at the end. They ask him, "Will we see you again?" and he answers, "Count on it," it made me wonder if they'll be the Shinra dudes on the submarine later on. I don't know if they intended for that exchange to be foreshadowing, but I'm maybe taking it that way...!

Anyway, now we're on the cargo ship, and it seems the first order of business is a Queen's Blood tournament!
