While I am utilizing the language of Starship Troopers, this is not about that specific set of conditions. Immigrants to America can join the US military and earn their citizenship easier/cheaper than most other avenues.

They're doing their part, so citizenship seems just compensation.

However, is it immoral to tempt (desperate) people with promises of a (better) life as a citizen of another country so long as they (potentially) go to war?

He's saying that foreigners serving in the US military would become citizens, not that service is a prerequisite for everyone becoming a citizen.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

The difference being that in Starship Troopers military service was one of the ONLY ways to gain citizenship. No one was born a citizen.

What's immoral is that conservative politicians would find a way to renege on their obligation to allow citizenship.

"We're sorry, but the forms you signed in triplicate were actually supposed to be signed in quadruplicate."
"You never told me about a fourth paper that I had to sign. Can I sign it now?"
"No. There's the boarder. Be over it within two hours."

Now that I think about it, that'd be pretty crazy if that was just every country that did it like the US. Pick a country, get free citizenship and then the first 4 to 6 years you not only get paid, but don't have any rent to pay and food is covered too, so then you just spend that time saving up to start your new life when you get out. The choice would be so easy for weebs.

Most people are only familiar with the (rather terrible) movie rather than the book. Citizenship was only earned after your term of service, however long that service was. For those not fit to serve in the military, other life-threatening duties could be found: hostile environment construction, medical experimentation, etc. The point was that no one who wouldn't risk their life for the state deserved to vote or hold office, and the state was constantly in a world war level of conflict such that many who signed up for service didn't live to get citizenship.

If it had a thousand times the mortality rate, maybe. It's been probably 20 years since I read it but it was something like 1/3 of people didn't live through their service to get citizenship.

Only if the military is doing something immoral. (Which is almost all the time, but it's conceivable that it wouldn't be)

The alternative is getting people to fight for you and then denying them citizenship. Thats worse.

I dont have a problem with it, as long as there are other viable avenues.

That said, I find the whole concept of citizenship of different nations to be a bit silly. My citizenship status in no way reflects an allegiance to a country.

I don't have an issue with citizenship for military service. What I find extremely bad though is all the interpreters we didn't bring out that helped our military in those regions and ended up putting their life and their families life at risk. Promises were made and promises were broken. There have been multiple stories done on this and it is really a bad look on us.

yeah this question really depends on how things actually are. if non-citizens could gain citizenship through military service that would help solve the immigration problem and the military recruitment problems at the same time. but this still wouldn't pertain to undocumented immigrants, it would just be people with green cards.

but the US government needs to start taking care of its veterans if they want to recruit more people
