This is why the U.S. is having their military build a pier in order to bring aid into Gaza.

https://apnews.com/article/biden-netanyahu-hot-mic-gaza-885b97a75d15d15ae7f7a47d0125c918

President Joe Biden s growing frustration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to mount, with the Democrat captured on a hot mic saying that he and the Israeli leader will need to have a come to Jesus meeting.

The comments by Biden came as he spoke with Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., on the floor of the House chamber following Thursday nights State of the Union address.

In the exchange, Bennet congratulates Biden on his speech and urges the president to keep pressing Netanyahu on growing humanitarian concerns in Gaza. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg were also part of the brief conversation.
Biden then responds using Netanyahus nickname, saying, I told him, Bibi, and dont repeat this, but you and I are going to have a come to Jesus meeting.

An aide to the president standing nearby then speaks quietly into the presidents ear, appearing to alert Biden that microphones remained on as he worked the room.

Im on a hot mic here, Biden says after being alerted. Good. Thats good.

The president on Friday acknowledged the comments, lightheartedly poking at reporters that they were eavesdropping on his conversation. Asked if he thought Netanyahu should be doing more to alleviate the humanitarian suffering, Biden responded, Yes, he does.

Better late than never, but hopefully he's sincere about this.

Unfortunately a huge support base of far-right Israelis are Christian fundies across the world who are ironically quite antisemitic and believe that Israel should be protected at all costs so all Jews could move there and bring about the End Times.

Political parties that explicitly preach discrimination against Arabs due to their race and religion hold 90 of 120 seats in the Knesset.

Pre-October 7th polling showed that half of all Jewish Israelis believed that all Arabs should be removed from Israel and never allowed to re-enter.

It's very clear that these women are in the majority, and likely a strong majority at this point.

I didn't generalize anything. But you do have to wonder how those in power that say these exact same things stay in power, if nobody actually votes or supports them. The easiest answer is that they have enough support to stay in power, which says that they're not simply a fringe group of Israeli voters, but a massive block.

The problem here though is that the IDF are largely a group of conscripts which means they do represent, to a degree, the average Israeli citizen. Everyone serves their 32 months (men) or 24 (women). People can also be called back in once they've served their mandatory time. Obviously there are career IDF troops as well, but they aren't the majority.

Yes, thats true. Which means most adults in Israel have to live their lives with the mindset that they may have to defend their families from Hamas. They have grown up with that mindset, since the first antifada to the second to the withdrawal from Gaza to this, the threat from Hamas is something they have to endure every day.

So there are some conflicting principles here.
  1. Every country, last I checked, prioritizes the lives of its citizens over non citizens to some degree.
  2. Every country with a moral compass acts when someone else in the world is suffering from some humanitarian crisis.
  3. There are other atrocities in the world like Sudan that arent getting nearly the same amount of world wide attention.
  4. Israel calls itself a bastion for freedom and democracy in the Middle East, and yet it can not be disputed is at least partially responsible for starving millions of people.
And in this dilemma, we see that Hamas has snared Israel into the perfect trap. Because while it makes perfect sense that the Israeli public would prioritize the safe return of Kfir Bibas and his family as well as all of the other hostages given what happened to them in October.

However, if we take tribalism out of the discussion, it seems ridiculous at this point that Israelis can still point the finger squarely at Hamas as being solely responsible for what has happened in Gaza.

I will tell you that at least in my social circle, friends, family, synagogue, whatever, its becoming harder and harder to hold on to the idea that justice needs to be done for Kfir and the other victims of October 7th, when its clear that justice is also going to need to be done for the children of Gaza. Its clear that both the Israeli government and Hamas have got to go. Just as its true that some Palestinians may be inspired to join Hamas as a result of what Israel
is doing and has done for decades, its also important to recognize that the sentiments in Israel regarding the welfare of the Palestinians is also born of decades of terror attacks as well.

Not trying to justify it. Just trying to explain how we got here.

That being said - I think we really do not have any other choice than to call for a ceasefire, hostages or not. This trap Hamas has set, the Israelis took the bait hook line and sinker.

It doesn't really what loopholes are attempted with the ICJ because eventually you'll run into the inevitable roadblock that international law is hogwash and geopolitics operates on might makes right.

The problem isn't thst the US has one bill that basically laughs in the face of international law. The problem is that its even possible for any country to laugh in the face of international law. Until that's resolved, its all just glorified theatre.

It's really good to hear this from you (EDIT: I mean the general sense of considering innocents on both sides rather than just one). And let me say - you absolutely should still ask for justice for Oct 7th victims, just as you should ask for justice for the civilians of Gaza. Neither side's civilians are the problem here; even if one wants to make an argument that one (or both) sides' civilians bear some responsibility for voting/working for the government in question, they're still not the ones ordering and carrying out these actions, and are not remotely on the same level of culpability even by that kind of logic.

Lmao that eagles using "look at what you make me did" excuse to avoid responsibility. That's still fucking excusing what IDF did.

No. The responsibility of murdering civilians are 100% on IDF, unless you agree that Hamas also isn't responsible for their terrors because Israel made them so.

What will Biden do if Israel accidentally destroys the port?
Accidentally?

They will purposely and maliciously destroy it, only killing Americans and call them Hamas. Then the Israeli media and some of the population will mock them as they have with other western civilians murdered by the IOF

The fact the best they could do is what looks like a refitted Spanish tugboat for cross Atlantic travel I feel says how much they care already.

Israel blowing up the pier is my biggest fear. In a sane world it would be a crossing the rubicon moment and Biden would send an ultimatum for Bibi to cease hostilities immediately or face US (with UN/NATO support) intervention. Realistically though? I expect handwringing by US officials even as the rest of the world demands satisfaction.

Heh, just read the other one:

President Biden was asked over the weekend if Israel ignoring the many warnings from Washington, other Israeli allies and global humanitarian aid agencies against carrying out a Rafah siege would be a red line.

Netanyahu says cease-fire deal would only delay Rafah offensive

"I'm never going to leave Israel," vowed Mr. Biden, who has stressed Israel's right to defend itself since the Hamas attack. "The defense of Israel is still critical, so there's no red line [at which] I'm going to cut off [U.S. provision of] all weapons."
