Example: you want to play the Metroid series. Do you start with the original, or Metroid: Zero Mission?

I usually do some research but the vast majority of the time I go remake

If the original is easily accessible, I'll play the original first. If I like it enough, I'll play the remake.

Depends.

Usually I prefer the remake though. I can only think of a few games where I prefer the original. RE3 and that's about it I think. But I still enjoyed RE3make.

Usually "newest" version of the original and play the remake when it comes up in the release order.

It really depends on what people consider to be the definitive experience. There's been plenty of bad remakes. Don't nobody wanna play new Star Wars Battlefront. And remasters can suck too - Silent Hill comes to mind. On top of all that, some remakes are entirely new games - I'd say both OG RE2 and the remake are worth the ride.

tl;dr video games are complicated

I'm not much of a remake guy, unless it's like "this is what the original devs wanted to express"

usually the remake because there's quality of life improvements more often than not.
if they change the gameplay around a lot, may go for the original though.

That's not a remake, it's essentially Battlefront 3 but without the number to make it sound cooler.

In general I def do the remake or remaster. Haven't really found one that's much worse than the original.

Generally the original unless there's some really compelling quality of life improvement in the remake, or good added content.

Original but if something is more like a very faithful remaster I could go with that.

Definitive version of the original - remakes aren't replacements but can obviously be incredibly good games in their own right
