I'm not even a fan of Dragon Ball or most of his other works and I'm still just kinda at a loss for words about this

Few people if any that has had as much influence om Japanese media the past 40 years.

So many of my favorite things are at least partially inspired by this man's works.

RIP

I did not expect this in a million years. Genuinely sad about this man. The influence the man had over manga and shonen is rediculous. One of the goats

I had a terrible middle school/early years of high school experience. If I wasn't feeling completely alone and abandoned, I was being bullied. Instead of friends, I had video games and anime. And of course, my favorite video game was Chrono Trigger and my favorite anime was Dragon Ball Z.

I first remember seeing Dragon Ball on UPN or something on Saturday mornings, really early. I remember the very first episode I saw was during the time when Gohan was being trained by Piccollo and Goku was I guess having fun in the Home for Infinite Losers. I remember liking it but not knowing why I liked it.

Somehow it got its hooks in me, especially when it was picked up by Toonami. I remember I had seen the Namek arc multiple times, and then Toonami announced that it was finally going to start showing the Cell arc. I was so excited I had my dad record the episodes on VHS for me. He also kind of got into it too.

It wasn't until later that I made the connection that the first game my dad and I played "together" (Dragon Warrior) also had characters designed by the guy who did Dragon Ball.

Nowadays, I really don't think of Dragon Ball as being all that good of a manga/anime. But for a middle schooler who had pretty much only seen it and Sailor Moon, it was everything.

That's pretty much exactly where I'm at top to bottom. There's a difference between still thinking something is good and respecting it. Dragon Ball is ETERNAL, and it's everywhere.
It's our Garfield. No amount of Super whining from me makes Toriyama any less than 1000 times the man I'll ever be. I'll always have my 2 VHS tapes containing 3 episodes each, one with the Pikkon fight and one with Trunks vs Goten, and they're still gonna have that sticker that says UNCUT in all caps. And you'd better be damn sure I would still sit down and watch Frieza v Goku for 5 hours despite my obsession with good pacing.

Maybe this is why it's hitting me so different. Miura was the creator of one of the greatest pieces of fiction I've read. Toriyama was the creator of one of the most inescapable. Miura felt like losing a person, while Toriyama feels like losing a piece of the world. No less impact, different emotion.

He was young too. Okay not a youngling but still. 68 is still an age where in some countries you don't even get to retire. Damn.
A legend for sure. I first learned him from Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest games.

This one genuinely made me upset and I shed some tears over it. This was so sudden, and just at 68?

I have been watching twitter talk about this on the timeline and its been fascinating. I KNOW He made a big impact on media with Dragonball but its even bigger than I imagined. Virtua Fighter's Jacky and Lau are inspired by SSJ and Tao respectively. I had no idea

yes we all know Sonic had heavy inspiration from DBZ but I had NO idea MARIO was inspired by Arale/Dr. Slump

Final Fantasy might not exist as we know it if it weren't for AT
Definitely the same goes for Dragon Quest

Kinnikuman, Jojo, it seriously goes on further than I could have possibly imagined

as a hispanic man, I can't even begin to tell you how big DBZ is in Latin America. I mean, people are finally starting to see the past few years but its been like that for ages, so this especially hurts me

RIP Sensei, you earned your place

Dragon Ball Daima is going to be bittersweet now. I'm certain everyone involved will be going even further beyond to ensure it turns out great and honours Toriyama's legacy.

I like to think Toriyama has made it along Snake Way and is now on King Kai's planet telling him a great joke.
