It's my second time reading the book, and I just noticed this. It was probably really obvious to everyone else who's ever read it, but while he's totally two-faced to most characters, one of the few he genuinely likes is Eduard, the bratty Villefort kid.

My first time through, I assumed he was just torn up about the kid just because he wasn't on the list. I mean, not even a SoB like Monte Cristo just wants to kill everyone, right?

But no, that's not it at all. They're just, the same guy. Mischievous little devils playing with deadly things they don't understand while the people they hurt the most love them for it.

Yeah I never got the impression that the Count wants to just kill "everyone" he's on a powertrip. He wants to punish those who "wronged" him

a big part of the story is how he regrets his revenge spreading to hurt innocents.

like, when the banker's wife(?) ended up committing the murder-suicide with her young son.

You should watch Gankutsuou, it's an anime adaptation from the perspective of Eduard.
