Is mind boggling for an anime released in 1988... I just saw for the first time and beyond the incredible story and tragedy, I really noticed how good the animation was.

Well it is Studio Ghibli after all. Beautiful high quality hand drawn animation has been around for a long time before that though.

AKIRA was released in 1988

I wonder what Disney thought about these industry defining works as they were likely pretty far into production of their first "Renaissance" era movie "The Little Mermaid"?

Grave of the Fireflies was released as a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro. You're supposed to watch that after and feel better.

But yeah Akira is the GOAT.

Exactly. Also Nausicaa (1984) and Wicked City (1987) were probably more impressive than GotF in terms of animation quality. Of course GotF is still an incredible film.

Animation has become worse, not better.

That goes for the art of film in general. The silent era.... thousands and thousands of extras, ENOURMOUS sets that still go unrivaled, and insane stunts...... There's been some great films after the 1920s, but to be honest none go as far as they did in that early era.

Now, these early anime studios you're talking about (well, earlier) , and these old film studios I'm talking about..... the working conditions were much harder. Those anime studios were sweatshops..... no ac, endless hours hunched over, years of back problems and arthritis...... The old films.... someone gets seriously hurt or mamed in a stunt, or gets trampled by the crowd in one of the old epics from the 1910s...... you didnt get an insurance policy that would cover you to not work for a year.

But the art.... the art was much better. It seems there is something to say about creation under pressure.

We won't get either of these again, so it's best to cherish the ones we have. The ones people broke their backs and died for.

I mean we got 100% hand drawn Red Line in 2009. 7 years, 100,000 cells. Ghibli just put out a hand drawn film, and Trigger continues to put out amazing hand drawn stuff (though with CG used as well).

Right, and the Makoto Shinkai films as well are some of the best ever (e.g. The Garden of Words).

Man, almost one day later and I'm still impacted and sad about this movie.

Also, reading up on the source of the movie is even more harrowing what the author went through, I'm paraphrasing but the author lose two younger sisters to malnutrition, and Seita is the selfless image that he wish he had been.

This was an excellent analysis of the movie... gives a lot of historical context of Imperial Japan that I wasn't aware of and really goes in depth on characterization as well... @29:25 brought out some themes I wasn't clued in on when I watching

Where? I've seen for sale, but at very sus/bootleg prices. And the real copies are too expensive to be within my financial reach.

I remember it once every couple years and try to hunt for a copy, but give up after a day or two.

I've only seen clips of this movie and it makes me horrified, depressed and so angry I don't want to watch the whole thing. That's how messed up it is. I'm glad it didn't pull any punches showing the horrors of the US' terrorist war crimes, but man it's difficult to bare.

@DnDer

AFAIK Angels Egg never got a Region 1 DVD release.

So you can go for the R2 copy for around 60 bucks for collection purposes, or just get a bootleg. (or you can be extra fancy and get it on laserdisc)

My policy with bootlegs is, if it was never released R1 and probably wont be, I have 0 guilt about getting a bootleg for it.

I recently went on the hunt for it as well. Did manage to find Black magic M-66 for a good price though. So it was worth it.

Legit-looking copies with the inserts and case and all were always 100+ USD.

It was less about "buying bootleg" and not getting the complete, original product, or the same quality product. (Like, if I go back to re-buy old PSX games to rebuild my library with, I'm the guy who can't stand green-border copies. Bootlegs feel a lot like that. It's irrational, I know.)

But since region is less important these days, with the right optical drive, I might try to get me one of the affordable versions from r2.

Just so I can get my hands on it and see it.

Well ebay is your friend. Just add a few to the watch list and someone may cut you a deal.

Ive gotten shit for half off just by doing that.

I just got all of the US releases for Hell Girl still sealed for under 200.

Unfortunately thats another series that season 4 never got a stateside release. Life is cruel.

Just finished Akira... what a trip.

Overall I do think Grave of the Fireflies was a better and more impactful movie, but Akira was amazing as well. Felt sorry for Kaori, but she didn't have enough character development time for me to care as much as I did for Setsuko.

We need 1980's anime to make a resurgence.

Cyberpunk on Netflix by Trigger is kind of a 1980s anime (since the original setting is from a 1980s cyberpunk RPG).

Not really. If you want some manga that covers that stuff I recommend Showa, a History of Japan and Barefoot Gen. Though historical revisionist nationalists hate them for precisely those reasons.

There's very subtle hints, and the movie does paint Imperial Japan and the citizens that support it in a very bad light.
