Hisbah spokesperson Lawal reported the arrest of 10 men near markets and a female groundnut vendor caught eating from her wares. The arrests followed tips from onlookers.
"We got 11 persons on Tuesday including a lady selling groundnuts who was seen eating from her wares, and some persons alerted us,"
"The other 10 were men and were arrested across the city especially close to markets where a lot of activities happen."
The 11 accused were later absolved of their crimes after vowing to abstain from food or drink. Additionally, their families were requested to ensure they observe the fast.
"For some of them, we had to see their relatives or guardians to have family monitor them, he said.
further said that non-Muslims were exempted from the practice, affirming that they would be apprehended if they were found selling food to Muslims during the fast.
"We do not arrest non-Muslims because this does not concern them, and the only time they could be guilty of a crime is when we find out they cook food to sell to Muslims that are supposed to be fasting," added.
Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan, which runs from March 11 to April 9.

That feels like it's still the fault of the Muslim person.

considering how they treat the Hijab, and that sexual assault victims often get stoned, it makes sense that they would "punish the temptress" so to speak

Feels excessive to arrest them when (and I know nothing about Islam) their god will punish them for it, I assume?

And I guess they're in every Islamic country.

"All" cops? Even God's? ("Especially God's," said Garak.)

I just saw a Malaysian article about there being black bag cops for this same exact thing of arresting people breaking their fast.

It holds many religions back, or rather one of the driving forces why people are becoming less religious. Including Christianity, of which so many seem to think isn't in the same camp.

We don't have to look far to see Christian fanaticism here in the states, especially if Republicans had their way in turning the US into a theocracy.

what really confused me about Muslims like these folks is why they care in the slightest if someone else sins or angers their God. do they think God is incapable of enforcing his own rules, or something?

We have western countries where entire cities are being held hostage by some Christian zealots who want stores closed on their lords resting day. Its not enough for them to rest, its disrespectful to their object of worship if you dont rest as well.

That's Haram and Anti Islamic of the Nigerian government.

Fasting is a personal spiritual journey between the individual and The Most High. It's not supposed to be compulsory or imposed upon you by another individual or some totalitarian government. This is sad smh

I wish more Muslims, especially the governing authorities, would learn to be more hypocritical like every other religion.

Their strict adherence to such guidelines just makes them seem super oppressive and controlling.

Which it is, and so was Christianity (Catholicism) in the dark ages. People getting hanged and/or burned for merely not practicing the faith correctly.

But you won't see the Vatican trying to execute Catholics for getting abortions in modern times, you would have hundreds of years ago.

How do they know who is Muslim and who isnt? Its a religion, not a card carrying club.

And if I were a Muslim living in Nigeria, could I temporarily renounce my faith and legally go eat some chicken nuggies at one in the afternoon?

It is in Malaysia. Your religion is on your state-issued ID.

That was one of the culture shocks I had when I visited. I knew there was an Islamic court system before I went, but I didn't know the secular government tracked their religions on their ID cards.

When I grew up, Good Friday was a special day.
Everything were closed, you only ate basic food (or fast), kids were not allowed to play, etc.
Luckily things changed and it is now as any other day.

Are you worshipping the divine or are you worshipping man?

If you do something that goes against your religious beliefs, that should be between you and God. Not anyone else who wants to play morality police.
