The parent company has a Chinese variant that's only available in China with much more direct government oversight. That's why.

Their version is an educational thing only.

Because they know full how how much social media screws up people's heads. So let other countries have the social media version instead!

What I find especially funny about posts like this is that if China is banning the things shown on TikTok and showing their own version to themselves not only does that imply the things on TikTok are entirely of our own, people don't even realize that they're the ones praising China's propaganda to their citizens.

They're maintained as two separate services. Douyin and TikTok users can't directly message or interact with each other.

Not really. Look around your home for products labeled "made in China", then try to find out how much of those items are even sold in the mainland PRC.

from what i can gather, tiktok was founded/developed by a chinese company (bytedance), though at this point they retain a 20% stake in it. it's headquartered in singapore and the usa, incorporated in a caribbean tax shelter country, and its ceo for the past few years is singaporean.

so yeah, xenophobic witch hunt / moral panic, likely backed by anticompetitive american corporate influences, and a seething political apparatus that can't exert political control / influence / censorship of its content.
