Persona 3 made Persona mainstream popular, in the first place. It was never "black sheep." Say what you want about how good it is compared to later iterations, but it literally put Persona on the map.

it's just that the gameplay was pretty unpopular and 4-5 had a lot more QoL stuff, Reload fixed the combat and added a lot of QoL (among all the other added stuff)

Persona 3 was the one that laid down the foundation that would be present and improved upon in P4 and P5.
