When I was young in retail absolutely but I can't really blame them. If they don't call someone in they'll be the ones on the registers lmao

I agree with this, but those that are sentenced to 5 years or less need to be adequately helped to stand any chance of rehabilitation. I dont think that happens anywhere near enough.

Theres definitely a lot of factors at play in terms of why people commit crimes, but I dont believe that people who get off on hurting others are as rare as that. I will concede, as somebody who grew up in a household with major links to organised crime, my perspective may be skewed.

From my college classes most crime aka stealing and similar things are crime of opportunity. Basically said person has little impulse control and sees a situation they belive they can and will get away with it. Everybody runs out of luck eventually though.

Similarly most break ins of homes are done by people who have been in your house before they know where things are and feel they can get in and out quick enough. With those that ain't the case there is broken window theory which falls back to the crime of opportunity. If someplace looks easy to break into it probably it.

I dont disagree with that but it doesnt really relate to violent crimes.

Poor impulse and emotional control usually. Things that can be treated, but as always the person needs to be open to it. Rehabilitation requires cooperation.

This is all true but there are definitely people who just enjoy violence for its own sake. Ive met quite a few people who simply enjoy asserting themselves over others or making other people suffer.

Just to be clear, Im not claiming that this is what everybody with a criminal record is. Most criminals are people who made bad choices, often influenced at least in part by things beyond their control. Im just taking issue with the idea that violent shit bags are exceedingly rare.

I do admit the system turned out to be a lot more reasonable and nuanced than I thought it would be. Literally every single person I've met across multiple offender counseling groups has been very insightful about their problems, how they led to their offending and how to address their problems and move on with their lives. I've learned a lot about things like how your attachment style forms, CBT therapy and the like.

And it wasn't that violent "shitbags" are exceedingly rare, it's that the psychologists I've spoken to have very rarely encountered someone who is a "lost cause" so to speak.

Fair.

Maybe Im just jaded. Ive met many people that I believe to be lost causes.

That said, Ive also met a number of people who, on paper, had absolutely no chance of success, but have managed it anyway. Im probably one of them myself.
