That would take quite a bit of doing seeing how things like gas prices are still expressed in tenths of cents.

I used to be able to pay for a fast food sandwich with a couple of quarters in my pocket. Now I can't even do that.

I'd say cents should have been abolished years ago but they probably won't as long as the "xx.99" trick works on people even though it's extremely easy to see through if you have even elementary school math knowledge.

(Which, in my experience watching quiz and game shows, most people fucking don't.)

There's already no need, you could round to the nearest 10 cents and be fine.

A previous employer of mine had all its prices end in 95 just so we never needed to carry pennies, which certainly helped to simplify banking.

still useful in electronic banking

the use of the cent as the smallest denomination in consumer-oriented electronic banking obscures the sub-cent margins being extracted from us wholesale by the financial system

Does it actually "work" on most people though? Or is it just something we kinda accept happens

I'd say the bigger problem in America is that tax isn't included in the price so it's not even $x.99, you don't actually know what you're paying until you're actually at the register. That makes no sense when Europe already include the tax in the price.
