This is one of the greatest movies ever?

I mean, I didn't hate it or anything but I was expecting, you know, a climax or something. I couldn't even get a real sense of a story at all until like halfway through.

I did think the camerawork was really something special though.

Wow how dare you?

The soundtrack, the betrayal, the fact it is all based on a true story, all of it. The story is "a guy makes his way up through the mafia", it's there from the very beginning.

Goodfellas is a movie based off of a real life gangster turned informant, so of course there's no sense of closure. The only closure for a mafioso is death, so...

Martin Scorsese is brilliant, though. I ought to watch Casino at some point.

Yeah, I didn't get that. At the beginning it said it was based off of a book and at the end it did the "this character went on to do this, that character went on to do that" thing. So I guess the book was non-fiction?

I've watched through it two or three times, and I've got to disagree about it being one of the best gangster movies ever; let alone one of the best movies ever.

Casino is great, though, as are: The Departed, Gangs of New York, and Mean Streets, as far as Scorsese's gangster movies that I've seen.

Could be I'm just not big on true story films. I can only think of a handful I liked. The Founder was p good. Actually, maybe that's the only one.

Tombstone was... kinda sorta based on a true story, I guess?

One of the more important aspects of a rise-and-fall crime story is that the fall is a slow, sad decline for our villainous protagonists, to illustrate that crime ultimately doesn't pay.

I personally think this is a big reason why Scarface stands out as being a negative influence on a several generations of would-be gangsters: going out in a cocaine-fueled, grenade launching blaze of glory pretty severely undercuts the 'fall' part of his story.

Ironically, one of the few things in that movie that's true to life was Wyatt walking into the river amidst a hail of gunfire to gun down Curly Bill.

Tombstone didn't even include that Doc Holliday was wounded in the hip during the gunfight at the OK Corral, while Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp did.

I'm on the side of the fence that its the greatest movie ever and I can watch it over and over and never get tired of it.

The narrative, the flow of the movie itself, the music, the acting, its all fantastic.

There's so many quoteable scenes in that movie.

The scene where Jimmy is trying to give those dresses away and you realize that there are signs that are warning the viewer that Karen was going to die if she went into that warehouse. Its all great.

I watched this movie when I was a kid and I usually didn't get into dramas but this one pulled me in. The beginning was the best part. I recommend this movie to everyone I can.

As somebody who has watched both movies many times...no. Goodfellas is deservedly way higher in the collective movie snob pantheon.

Casino does at times have a better story, though. And it's generally easier to follow + the setting is intrinsically interesting (Old Vegas). But that's what it is, a great movie.

Goodfellas is an astounding movie. Stellar, superior.

Remember, that the movie is 34 years old, and it crystalized a lot of tropes that you've seen in newer movies, so if it seems "tropey" that's only because it was the Grandfather of them.

Maybe I should give it another watch and see if it sinks in a little better the second time.

I've had that happen before. With American Graffiti, my immediate review was "fun but nothing special" but the more I thought about it, the more I "got" it, ya know? It really was a pretty phenomenal movie, about a week later, lol.

It may end up being the case. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is one of my top five all-time favorite movies, but the first time I ever watched it after hearing all the hype about it I was like "huh...that's it?" Took a second or even third viewing before it really stuck with me.
