No one since 1914 has ever won a tournament in their top division debut.

ENTER, TAKERUFUJI

Sprained his ankle 24 hours before, no fucks given, shows up and wins cleanly with a nice strong arm thrust to the midsection. This young man is going places.

They train alot people who are advanced in cadio or strength exercises would have a hard time getting through it.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/sumopedia/24/

But rikishi many times struggle to keep up with the diet. They eat many time more than being full most of them and I think I saw something about they won't be allowed to go to sleep until they eat the required amount. I don't know how it varies between the different sizes the eating regimine.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/sumopedia/5/

The food is excellent though.

The strongest in contact sports. Incidentally, because of all that muscle and the nature of their lifestyle, they actually have less fat relative to their mass compared to the average person, and almost no visceral fat.

Yeah that's some of them but not the average:

https://www.asahi.com/sp/ajw/articles/13424497
The current crew of rikishi in the highest makuuchi division weigh an average of 160.2 kg, up 15 kg or so from three decades ago.

They have an average body mass index of more than 47. A BMI of 25 or more is considered a sign of being overweight.
The Japanese Sumo Association has set 10 health guidelines for rikishi. Eat fish and vegetables along with meat, says one. And another advises, Chew your food well.
The guidelines also discourage wrestlers from eating potato chips, strawberry layer cake and donuts with bean jam filling as snacks.
The JSA, which has its own health insurance association and clinic, carries out regular health checkups on its squad of wrestlers. It is, however, not easy for the association to oversee the rikishi, as they live separately in 45 sumo stables.
Getting big is part of the rikishis job, said Minoru Kamata, honorary director with Suwa Central Hospital.
The JSA should work systematically on the diet and physical exercise of its wrestlers so they don't develop diabetes and other health problems," Kamata added.
Kamata advised the JSA to also "appoint medical practitioners as advisers and work to change the way the wrestlers train when they are young.
COVID-19 patients with diabetes had a 9.2 percent mortality rate, while those with no chronic health problems had a 1.4 percent mortality rate, according to a joint mission report by the World Health Organization and China that was released in late February.
The report's finding was based on an examination of approximately 56,000 confirmed COVID-19 infection cases.

Chankonabe. There's no special ingredients, mostly veggies and meat. Most retired wrestlers end up starting or joining a chankonabe restaurant, since every wrestler learns how to cook and serve the stuff.

I hope terunofuji can make a strong recovery. Really the only reason this was possible is the culling of all the yokozyna through injuries like kisanosato who was absolutely dominating along with Harumafuji until he injured him and then broke that beer bottle over the head of another rikishi. That put a big hole for newcomers along with a lot of the strong ozeki retiring along with yokozuna hakuho.

Terunofuji is the last of the titans that were there.

No. They get big because they load up on carbs, beer, and go straight to sleep. That's why alot of them get type 2 diabetes.

Well he only won directly cause of that partially but biggest reason is terunofuji was hurt AND Hoshoryu lost to asanoyama.

What's funny is that Midori just kept doing it and it worked, thrice in a row, and Hosho was like "fuck that, I'll do it even faster."

I think, barring henka, slips, and Hakuho's fucking elbow, Hosho had the single fastest application of winning technique in recent times.

I didn't see him do as much as he does recently. Midorifuji been doing that for ever. Hoshoryu did more mawashi techniques like yorikiri. Hakuho I didn't notice the elbow that much but what evernhe was doing mostly mawashi stuff I saw was working.

wasn't aware there were people here that followed sumo

I'm going to post my hot take: every Mongolian that has made Ozeki has also achieved Yokozuna rank, but I believe both Hoshoryu and Kirishima will be the first to not make it there

In sports, many that are regarded among the greatest all have something in common; the "it" factor, they just have "it" and it's something that's hard to explain but when you see a talented/generational type of athlete, you just know. This is no different from those that have become Yokozuna

While Hoshoryu and Kirishima are great, and will likely be solid Ozeki, I just don't see it in them to make that next step. But I would love to be proven wrong since Hoshoryu is one of my favorites

Yeah the Mongolians have had a great streak with that.

Kirishima may not but has potential to get there. Hoshoryu I think will get there given current state of affairs. He's one of the strongest left beside terunofuji. Kotonowaka is the other one I see as a bit stronger than him but doesn't have as much diversity and skill with technique that might get to yokozuna beside Mongolians. The two newbies takerufugi and onosato may get there but it will be some time before they could over take these two.

Dang is that the reason for their lower age expectancies?

Kinda. Obviously diabetes doesn't help, but where most of them would flounder is in the retirement transition period. There are more specialists specifically for this nowadays, but you still have some archaic bullshit tied into it. "Oh, his leg is bad? Sure sure physical therapy, but also let's try leeches and weasel oil."

Took a man dying to get a quick response unit established, and that was this decade. I love Sumo, but it's heartbreaking sometimes.

Yeah their bad with medical stuff. One of them was hurt AND couldn't be taken out of the ring. And they wouldn't let the lady doctor enter cause they were more worried about the purity of the ring. They finally let her in after a while but medical stuff and women they are still way behind on.

They were showing female sumo wrestling is gaining more momentum. If a woman becomes good enough to become a real rikishi.....which has never happened before it's still in doubt if they would be allowed in. Other sports are like that too but their still on how pure a woman is.

That sucks to hear. How bad is it compared to other contact sports?

IIIRC, Boxing has the worst brain damage, and Gridiron Football has the most neck injuries, but Sumo has the highest injury rate in general. And only very recent modernization efforts for healthcare. Because, again, someone fucking died. Just laid there with a broken neck while they dicked around figuring out what the fuck to do, flopping his body around because of the lack of knowing how to handle these 350lb men, even though the sport is literally over 2,000 years old.

But it balances out because when they train they freaking train.

It's literally their whole life. And it's weird as hell, too; It's longform training, but specifically to build muscle and fat in a certain way, and all to operate at MAXIMUM POWER for about a minute before getting totally gassed.
