Hello all! The NSO completion dream continues for ctes, mzero, wallz, ZeroSignal and friends. If youd like to formally join the project, just say so =)
Heres the intro from thread 1: On October 10, 2013, Torbjrn Thor Pedersen left his job, girlfriend, and family behind in Denmark to embark on an epic journey. His goal? To visit every country in the world without flying. Thor has just returned home, having completed his journey after a decade. Hi, Im Wallz. I like video games and setting ambitious goals Ill almost certainly never follow through to completion. In honor of Thor Pedersens impressive feat, today I embark on a significantly more impressive quest to play and, where applicable, beat/complete every game offered via Nintendo Switch Online in the NA region. This includes replaying games Ive played before. My realistic goal is to at least spend some quality time playing every one of these titles. I suppose theres a chance some titles will get delisted, at which point those games will no longer count towards my goal. I am hoping we have 4-5 more years before NSO is decommissioned which would mean getting through a couple titles a week on average should be a winning pace. This is under the seemingly safe assumption Nintendo will continue to drip feed a few titles a while longer before no new titles are added. I doubt I can sustain such a pace, especially since many older games will require a lot of practice, but lets hope this fools errand is fun nonetheless. Also, Im ignoring those SP versions of games, obviously. Also feel free to chat here about games youre playing on NSO, relevant news, or just complain about the lack of GameCube and DS games. We can also play Xevious together if you're up for it, that's a 1984 game going by famicom release and also shouldn't be too long. Edit: All those would be by Famicom release since it's 1984, so I am actually not sure how that one is not there. Rebirth will still be a while despite me being 75 hours into it. But I'll knock something short out if for the sake of playing the something at the same time, I'm off work mostly for Easter this week. Just thought you might want to not play Excitebike twice in a row (I know I would not like that). Xevious seems like a fine answer if going chronological.

I might just do Excitebike and Vs. Excitebike back to back due to short length but its a good point. And yes thats exactly what happened with Xevious. There are some flaws with the db Backloggd uses. Xevious has a separate page for the Famicom and NES release. Most games do not. I went ahead and added the Famicom version of Xevious to the list. Now that I've said the good things about the game... jesus christ it's bad. I'm not sure anything really works. I thought it was at least short but I was only halfway when I thought I was done. Sledge might be the worst character or the game is just screwed against you but the shadow of myself damaged me way less than anything else. It's annoying getting 10 hits in a row with this trap system and then getting hit like once and we're back to stalemate. Even my super attacks or whatever this game calls them weren't that strong compared to standard enemy hits. I guess I will give the game that it's fun how part of the title is kinda fourth wall breaking with how it feels playing it.
We can trash talk early 1980 games but at least those were somewhat impressive at the time or something. This has less excuse being so bad. I was feeling left out. Yeah this game kinda sucks lol I don't hate it as much as ctes apparently, but it's really bad. Not early NES bad, but bad. Throws are broken as heck, but that was the only way I was able to win so it's a double-edged sword I guess. But the fact that you can whiff an air attack and throw instantly is hilariously unbalanced, and they do so much damage. The best strategy for enemies without a projectile seems to be to just turtle and poke them when they get close. Aggro doesn't work at all because pretty much every attack has invincibility frames (even throwing a fireball, yeesh). Ashura and the last guy were so busted, but luckily abusing the throw system was enough to win. It only took me an hour and a half to beat normal with Grimmrock or whatever his name is. I played Tennis and actually won on my first go but it was level 1 lol. I think Ill do another match at level 3.
I also played Pinball. I considered myself done after clearing the bonus stage once and scoring over 100k. Jcgamers high score still stands though barely! We all know sports titles are generally nothing to write home about, and these early NES sports games have not been appealing parts of this project. With that said tennis was a pleasant surprise. It can be frustrating at times but I had fun with it and can see myself playing again on higher difficulties. Maybe Im a victim of low expectations here, but I enjoyed it.
Pinball isnt anything special for a pinball game but I really like pinball. I can see revisiting it from time to time as its a great pick up and play title for shorter sessions. I created a spreadsheet that lets me plug in our lists and generates a combined ranking. For example, Super Mario Bros. is
1st out of 15 for wallz (0.067) 3rd out of 29 for MZero (0.103) 4th out of 37 for ctes (0.108) Divided by three gives us 0.093, good for fourth place! It's alright, but not good. It's better on arcade as far as I recall, makes sense, NES could run less stuff on the screen. Controls fine, as some point basically only missiles can destroy stuff that's a bit of a shame.
