I got dinged at trivia today for not guessing Mitski as a musician from Japan, even though all her major releases are from American record companies and recorded in America. She was born in Japan, but her songs are in English and she lives in America. Her Wikipedia page is nebulous on where she was raised, but she began song writing in Turkey. Maybe shes a Turkish artist

This reminds me of a time the trivia guy asked what the original ice cream flavor a Shamrock Shake from McDonalds was. The answer was lemon-lime but my team guessed vanilla. We won the point since it was a vanilla base and had vanilla syrup, and was only lemonlime flavored not lemonlime ice cream.

we still lost that night

If the question is asking where they came from, answering where they've done most of their work is incorrect.

It was something like this Japanese artist was nominated for x award in 2020

I considered Mitski but thought she was an American artist. Im not saying I was right, just that it could maybe be argued shes an American artist.

Wikipedia lists her as an American artist. (I've never heard of her before)

She's an American artist that's from Japan.

She could also be considered from Turkey and from America, but originally from Japan.

In that case, I agree that that's ambiguous. Just stating somebody's nationality generally suggests you're talking about how they identify now, not what their origins were.

Leonardo was Italian. Spending the last three years of his life in France doesn't make him French.

da Vinci means 'from Vinci" as in Vinci, Tuscany.

If she's from japan, but now lives in america, I feel like the correct way to describe her by nationality would be "japanese-american"
