SNES will be hotly contested and it should be because it has several worthy choices

Super Mario Bros.
The Legend of Zelda
Rad Racer
Super Mario Bros. 3

Rad Racer should just be the Power Glove but whatever.

CT will be an interesting case in terms of legacy because it certainly isn't the one for sales. It's just that beloved and respected.

As for whether classes would've been a thing in jrpgs, yeah. Again, they were looking at wizardry and Ultima and deciding what kind of RPG with a hero story to do. Square was doing the same. The influence really does go back further but the one who makes a complete package first deserves credit for that, especially when it's a success.

I definitely agree with this Im just not sure FF1 was far enough off the mark that DQ3 deserves a wealth of recognition for it as some sort of big step

I guess you can use that AND the Japan cultural impact as a combination and yeah maybe justify putting the thing as #4. Maybe.

Oh I'm in a similar boat as you, had FF in there initially for that reason. Especially as there's a heavy regional limit to DQ3 being a success and we aren't talking significant number of years difference for anything - it's all a constant trickle. Add in that DQ3 is exclusively cared about on the NES and it's limited there but at the same time this is about the NES. To gaming as a whole, FF1 is definitely more important as without it, you don't have Square. But to that console, I'll edge out DQ3.

If you want to talk about an influence Dragon Quest III may have had, it's that the typical design of the monster mimics may have came from Akira Toriyama's design for them in DQ III, where they have teeth.

several readers suggested that the now-commonplace image of a mimic as a chest with teeth might have its origins outside of Dungeons & Dragons itself. According to this theory, it was the artwork of Akira Toriyama best known in the West for his manga, Dragon Ball for the Japanese video game, Dragon Quest III (1988)

http://grognardia.blogspot.com/2024/01/more-on-mimics.html

Now, he didn't create mimics, that's still Dungeons and Dragons, just the design of a monster chest with teeth.

While I don't necessarily think that's grounds for being included on a Rushmore, it's a neat trivia.

While it's true the original AD&D monster manual mimic doesn't have visible teeth, it is chest that attacks you. The 2e Mimic in the Monstrous Manual clearly does have teeth, though it did come out in 1993.

(1e monster manual art in this wiki page)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimic_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons)

It is possible but are we sure the artist of the monstrous manual knew of Dragon Quest 3, or is it another example of "first doesn't necessarily mean anything cause it would have happened/was implied anyway"

Interesting trivia either way though

DQIII is the first one people famously lined up around the block for and led to them changing future release dates to Sundays. It seems pretty cut and dry to me
