They became way too aware, and weirdly topical.

They have always had a bit of topicality, but. Like, multiple episodes placing the gang in Trump rallies or infamous events, straight up mentioning stuff that happened recently and basing episodes on it, and weird rants about recent hot topics.. it really feels off.

The later seasons arent all stinkers, but i definitely felt a huge drop in the recent one.

i just abruptly stopped liking it, it was weird. it had a couple good eps but i wasnt a fan of most of them, like the premier, the macs mom one, the finale. a bunch really

Yeah, the past few seasons lately will have one or two really good episodes with the rest being meh to bad. It's the curse of all long running TV shows. At least it's not totally bad like how a lot got. I am hoping the next season will be the last though. It's about time for it to end.

I'm on season 9 and the show like, isn't really funny? But it is humorous? There are certain times I laugh but I can't remember exactly what or why. It turned into a weird flanderized version of all of them. They used to be bad people doing bad things now it's just ramped up to a million.

Sunny has always been topical. Go watch old seasons. Season 1 literally did an episode about abortion where Dennis was literally on the fence about it.

The episode where Dennis rants about a cashless society and how he's painted as the hero / sympathetic figure there was clearly written from the point of view of somebody who doesn't do cashier work.

Cashless is so great when you're on that side of the register, especially if you work somewhere that you formerly had to handle wet, sweaty money that somebody pulled out of their bra or underwear. It also makes things much faster when people don't want to argue about it, and prevents short-changing on either side or the use of counterfeit bills.

I do agree with the episode that phone apps are becoming way too prevalent and required now, though. I don't want to have to install a new app every time I want to shop somewhere.

It seems to vary episode by episode. Like sometimes Dee is really sympathetic, or sometimes Charlie seems to be misunderstood and manipulated, but then they make them monsters in the next.

The newer seasons are even more topical, and definitely arent witty or clever about it.

You could see the insane level of maintenance that Kaitlyn Olson had from one season to the next.

But yeah though I still watch and enjoy the show, its gotten too wacky where its just about whatever goofy situation they end up in rather than funny lines or moments. Im aware thats literally what sitcoms AKA situational comedies were meant to be, but Sunny was always more than there are too many farts in the fart machine! to quote 30 Rock.

That this show is still good, even great after 16 seasons is nothing short of a miracle.

Season one also had an abortion episode, a gun episode and a molestation episode. It's always been topical and always there to offend.

what really killed the show for me was their podcast. It was usually funny and sometimes they'd slip into acting like their characters...but they'd also get completely hung up on worrying about what viewers thought about the podcast. "do you guys like it? are we doing okay?" stuff like that.

kinda made me feel like they have the same perspective with writing the show. early seasons you can tell that they found everything hilarious while they were writing/filming it, and they'd do things in the show just cus they thought it was funny.
nowadays, it's like the opposite and as if they don't know what they think is funny anymore.

I think Always Sunny was always consistent in that regard. The show went out of its way to be topical since the beginning. I thought the last season was pretty great; the season where they go to Ireland was so so, but I still think the show has remained consistently funny overall.

The offensive part is fine. The show was always great at being offensive and funny.

The new eps just seem to be trying to be shocking. Like modern Family Guy.

Shocking is not the same as offensive. Or funny. Just feels desperate.

How are they even more topical? They've always been topical.

It's Always Sunny has always been topical, has always spoofed things, always been offensive, and has for the most part always been hilarious.

Season 2-5 are among the GOAT comedy seasons ever.

I haven't watched a new Sunny ep for awhile, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that this might be the result of attempting to make comedy in a post-satire society. It's almost impossible to not be ludicrously on-the-nose with topical satire nowadays because real life has become just as ridiculous as satirists 10-20 years ago predicted it would be.

Dennis Takes a Mental Health Day is one of the best episodes of the entire series.
