I'm getting $510 back for my State Tax Returns. I'm unemployed right now, but still getting paid until July. Then that sweet sweet unemployment comp kicks in. So I'm not looking for work anytime soon and a new console could help kill the brutal summer time hours when it's too hot to do anything.

I've got a decent Steam library, but I stopped getting games on PC about 2 years ago and bought a PS5 instead of upgrading my PC. Still, it might be nice to have that library. Someone even told me that BG3 runs pretty well on it.

The main complaint I hear is about how big it is. Not really a portable console that you want to carry around. I mean, even the Switch is kind of a pain and I guess this one is like a bulky Switch.

What say you, CE? I imagine you guys have spent some time with one.

ALSO, how does it handle fighting games? Granted I would be playing at a disadvantage for sure, but could I have fun playing SF6 on it?

The fact that whether or not games work properly is a total crapshoot makes it not worth it. Also the controller layout is a nightmare. Horrendous mushy d-pad too so dont bother with fighting games.

I don't really bother trying to play modern bigger video game releases on it since my PS5 or series X/what bit I bother playing on my desktop PC is for all that. Mine is mostly used to play the smaller indie-like games (games like river city ransom underground and pizza tower is perfect for the steam deck), older games, or have it set up to play emulators.

I like it. Use it both handheld and docked. Not only is it great for Steam Library, but it's a great emulation machine.

My Deck has too many "self backup" games and I don't have the time.

Yeah, that's also a big appeal. I love Indie games that you can boot up and play for 10 minutes, or get sucked into and replay start to finish on a whim. Hotline Miami, Hyperlight Drifter, Furi, Door Kickers Action Squad. I also love digital novels like 999. These are fun to play on your couch just chilling like the mod said. BG3 and the new Shadowrun games are also good contenders, though BG3 isn't indie.

I even started buying a bunch of these titles on Switch as they were ported. But my Steam library is king. Still not sure I want to blow my entire refund on it, but considering it.

Each game literally gives you its level of compatibility with the Steam Deck.

It'll play most AAA games up to a few years ago on high settings and a lot of newer ones with some tweaks. It's a linux computer that has a desktop mode so it's extremely modifiable. It's the best emulator I've ever used. I play it docked most of the time and it's effectively a console but then when I travel I can bring it with me. You can upload other media like shows and movies and watch them on it.

Biggest complaint would be battery life but its competitors aren't really any better in that department.

I don't play fighting games but you can connect whatever controller you want.

Depends a lot on what you're playing. If it's a demanding game you'll probably get 2 to 3 hours. For lighter loads I've seen battery estimates as long as 8 or 9

Though if getting an Ally I'd suggest singling out a model with a R9, R10, or higher serial number. Prior models have an issue with melting SD cards, and they only started implementing hardware fixes starting with some of the R8 models.

If you only play AAA it's not worth it at all. I mostly play indie and these days it has all but replaced... Everything aside from the switch tbh lol

So, I'm looking, and it looks like there's a 256 GB, 512 GB and 1TB model.

Which one you guys got? Seeing as you recommend it primarily for Indie games, I'm wondering if I could get away with just a 256. On the other hand, I do want to play BG3 on it.

I think they're worth it even tho I don't own one. I have a switch lite and there are tons of games I wish it could play, especially with keeping steam sales and emulation in mind. if and when my switch breaks, I'll prob end up replacing it with a steam deck.

I'd look into whether the 256 model is an SSD or not. iirc the original (non-oled) had a slow-ish drive for the 256 model, but 512 and 1tb had a faster m2 drive.
idk how much of a difference that makes, but a faster read speed can improve performance and battery life (that said, the actual games themselves and how intensive they are on CPU/GPU will have the greatest impact on battery life)

I have played some fighting games on it and enjoyed it, but I may not be a good barometer as I dont play online so cant tell you how the online is. If you are ok with using a controller they play well in handheld mode. The Steam deck also has Bluetooth so you can connect a preferred controller or arcade stick.

I stick to mostly 2d fighters and havent played some of the more recent games. I have played the following fighting games on the Steam Deck.

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection
Capcom Fighting Collection
Ultra Street Fighter IV
Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3
King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match Final Edition
King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match
King of Fighters XV
Samurai Shodown 2016

I don't own it because I do most of my gaming on a linux desktop PC, but it seems fun. My line of work and commute don't really line up with using it on the go, either.
