It's also weird to me that people are handwaving the guy's actions saying he just thought he was protecting his family. There is absolutely no reason for him to have gone outside and shot her.

I don't think this is a scam, I think the elderly man was getting pranked. Even then, fuck the prankster and also fuck the elderly man for taking out his gun as his first response. If I was if I was in the elderly man's position, I would be calling the police about this and telling the woman to not enter the house in any circumstance, not immediately threaten with a gun. This situation was fucked up beyond belief, the real victim is the poor uber driver that had no idea what was happening.

I smell that this incident is fuelled by racial hatred from the shooter.

Very likely. I doubt he would have been as aggressive to an elderly white woman.

To those wondering how the scam would even work

I dont know for sure. However my Mother was called a couple months back by someone pretending to be a county lieutenant that said if she didnt pay her fine by that day, a warrant would go out for her arrest. He claimed the fine was for contempt of court or something because she never showed, and this was her final warning. She (obviously, scam) had no clue what he was talking about, but the name he gave her was a real lieutenant in the county sheriffs office, and he even provided her a fake badge number.

The reason this is relevant, is because he said she had to pay the fine with cash (cant remember if he offered money order), and it had to be dropped in a one of a few specific postal drop boxes that were linked directly to the county. He did also clarify that she had her own mode of transportation.

My theory was that certain postal boxes were easier to break into, and once they knew exactly which one she dropped it in they would just break into it and grab her envelope. After reading this story, I also believe they might have been willing to provide transportation (like an Uber) to the particular drop off location. I want to emphasize that he was giving her locations of official USPS drop offs.

Maybe (its just a guess) its a similar scam and this old man didnt have transportation. But either way, knowledge is power and all, and maybe tell your older loved ones about these kind of scams.

My Mother thankfully called me freaking out because she couldnt afford it and was worried about going to jail. I told her to call the county and verify any of the information with them, which was when she found out this is a known scam to them. They opened up a case, she gave as many details as possible, but shes never heard back.

Too many people just eager to find any excuse to shoot someone in cold blood.
So eager he waited 85 years and for someone to threaten his familys life. Must have been on the bucket list, I guess!

Seriously though, he is obviously guilty of contributing to the death of that poor women, and I hope he spends his final years in jail. But to act like he was itching to shoot someone, especially under the circumstances, is a bit absurd. I hope the scam caller is found and charged as well, because they also deserve to rot.

Oooomph, 85 year old white man? Yeahit certainly didnt help. Still, none of us should forget that someone, either for money or amusement, orchestrated this situation. Im not hand waving the responsibility of the old man because hes guilty, but we cant write off the scam caller either.

Its hard to pass any judgment on the guy without knowing his mental state. He could just be an asshole ready to shoot someone for any reason, a confused old man fearing for his life, or someone with dementia/other issues who shouldnt even be living alone in the first place.

"Contributing?" He followed her outside while she was clearly backing away in defense and shot her. I'm not saying he was "itching" to shoot somebody, but he did a hell of a lot more than "contribute" to her death.

When she tried to get away, he shot her once, then there was more exchange between them," Shultz said. "Mr. Brock was at some point injured to his head, and he shot Ms. Hall a second time. There was more conversation, and then he shot her a third time. Only after he shot her a third time did he then make contact with authorities to report the incident."

In the dashcam footage, Mr Brock is heard demanding that Ms Hall give him her phone.
He also refused to allow her to leave, police said.

Yeah, if these details are true, yikes.

Thats for lawyers to decide. Im not one, and if you are please let me know.

Im willing to even jump ahead to the conclusion that hes guilty, something that cant be legally claimed until his trial. But given the details, it seems to me that he is clearly guilty of contributing to her death. Why did I use the word contributing? Because its also clear he was one of two people involved that contributed to her death.

If this were a case of three people who beat someone to death, I would use the same term for each of them. I dont know if thats the proper word to use legallyagain, not a lawyer. But it seems like an apt word for describing this situation.

If its a fault in my English, I apologize, and if you have a better suggestion that acknowledges two people at guilt for causing this poor woman to be killed, Im willing to hear you out. But it feels like youre attacking me over semanticsbecause?instead of concurring with me when I said this.

I mentioned it because contributing to and actually committing the murder are two different things, and he's being charged with the latter. Regardless of the circumstances, nobody made him follow her out, stop her from leaving, and pull the trigger, multiple times, with gaps in between. Saying "contributing" feels like it's minimalizing that. If that was not your intention, then cool.

Yeah, all of that is really bad. Far beyond just "defending his family" he held her hostage and shot her for trying to leave.
