Their call to action worked, but yes it didn't work to sway the way reps voted.

So you're admitting to lying about what the article actually said? How dare Tiktok defend themselves against scumbag politicians who wants to ban the app on one hand but still use it to campaign on the other.

Lol

Like fox News telling their voters to vote for trump?

I remember when Wikipedia and Google called for people to vote against SOPA. Back when techbros had some standards.

Lying about what? I acknowledged I was wrong about the "forced" part of my original post.

Companies are allowed to encourage their customers to take political actions that will benefit themselves. I don't see much of a problem with something like this--it's very open and transparent.

The stuff like, for example, how Uber and Lyft lobbied behind the scenes to manipulate California laws in their favor, now THAT is a real problem.

Plausibility is a type of evidence. Don't start moving goalposts.

GOG is owned by Poland and 4chan is currently owned by a Japanese creator and is filled with Russian propaganda and you have no problems with it.

Who says I don't? And either way, what does that have to do with cybersecurity?

VK is a Russian owned social media platform that hasn't been banned.
VK is not an app in the phones of so many Americans.

Imagine if other countries decided to block any US platforms solely because of the poor policies of the US government and thus assume Americans are gathering data to invade them. That's xenophobia.
You yourself said xenophobia works on the nationality/ethnicity. Your example is other countries taking issue with our poor policy, not the fact that we're American. The CPD has long been a confirmed spy issue, and I don't get why you single out Tiktok as the one thing that isn't a risk.

Should Genshin Impact be banned because they're also owned by a Chinese company and have to fall under CCP laws and potentially have Chinese spies collecting data? Without actual evidence it's pure fearmongering xenophobia.

Again: You gave a definition of xenophobia, but none of your examples match the definition you give. There would have to be an issue with them specifically being Chinese. It's not that. They could be any nationality or ethnicity. The issue is policy, not the fact that they have x phenotype or y holiday.

I feel like if Trump flip flopped and became a "China supporter" that would actually hurt him thanks to his "fans" being extremely xenophobic.

Or maybe they're all just brainwashed enough to be like "Yknow what? Fuck yeah, TikTok!"

Tiktok disappearing isn't going to magically make our schools stop sucking. Address that before hand wringing over one social media site.

Trump currently opposes the ban because he thinks it would give more social media space to Facebook, which he hates since it refused to allow him to post electoral misinformation. He flip flopped already from his own attempt to ban Tiktok after a bunch of users bought tickets to one of his rallies and failed to show.

The problem really is less about China getting our information, and more about how China can manipulate social media to sway Americans opinions. They can, and probably already do, use recommended videos and whatever TikToks version of a News Feed is to get people into echo chambers and increase divisiveness among the U.S. population. Progressive outrage over Palestine is probably an example of this.

What sort of a non-sequiter is this? How exactly is Elon Musk a puppet of an enemy of the US? Maybe I don't want the answer. Anyway I'm all for the eradication of Twitter too, but not via this same process.

The precedent was set with the Russia election tampering. The US is considerably behind on cyber social engineering countermeasures.

He is the enemy

Wow how dare people get angry over Israeli atrocities. Apparently it's Tiktoks's fault that people use the platform to express outrage and not Israel's fault that they've been bombing and starving civilians.

And people should only get their news from MSM or Facebook which pretend that everything is okay /S

I don't think anyone opposed to the bill is saying Tik Tok doesn't have any problems. But those problems are endemic to social media in general. Our issue is that Tik Tok is clearly being singled out. And no one has found any evidence that Tik Tok is any worse than other social media. All they have is vague accusations (with no evidence other than the fact that they used to be headquartered in China) that the CCP is controlling the company and using it to spy on us somehow.

So now we have this xenophobic law that will take away something that younger people really enjoy, and since it leaves all the other tech companies alone, there will be no benefit to society. We'll just have all the same problems on the American-owned apps.
