Zelda 2
This.

Then when mmorpgs starting gaining steam I put in around 3k hours in Graalonline. It looked just like Zelda and had a lot of players that I became friends with. One I still talk too after 25 years.

Do you know what the first Japanese console RPG was to officially use the term "RPG" in its self-descriptions (ads, copy, and instructions)? The answer might surprise you.
.

Here is the release sheet for the English translation version it from allGame (former professional video game classification database with a paid subscription service).

Title: The Legend of Zelda
Platform: Nintendo [Entertainment System]
Genre: Role-Playing
Style: Third-Person 2D Action RPG
Release Date: 1987
Developer: Nintendo R&D4
Publisher: Nintendo of America, Inc.
Controls: Joystick/Gamepad
Flags: Historically Significant, Available for download on Wii
I've no doubt.

But regardless of how the publisher described it, RPG and action-adventure are separate genres and it definitely fits the latter.

Dragon Warrior was the first one that I enjoyed. I played some here and there for a long time afterwards. The first jrpg that I fell in love with was Lunar for the SegaCD though.

Ah, never hit my radar. I discovered new games then from friends or walking around blockbuster/walmart.

So are you saying because that game is action adventure then Zelda is too?

The early ones are action adventure 100%

BOTW is blurring the lines a bit. Armor sets, different weapons, stats ( ie heart containers & stamina), cooking, Quests other than the main quest

You also have more robust stores than past games.

I would say 2 is an RPG. You have stats, several sidequests, can level up health, defense, offense.

It can be argued that packaging and ad descriptions are loose references to the game; they do not necessarily represent the game's actual content--they can be separated from the game. However, instructions and in-game text are direct references; they represent the game's actual content--they cannot be separated from the game.

Pre-1990s RPGs in Japan...

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/b/bd26f025.jpg

And *this* is where the RPG/Adventure disagreement comes from: Management (studio) and Promotion (agency) were told by the Publisher to hide any glaring western-RPG influences by localizing the look, feel, and description of their RPGs to appeal to the sensibilities and preferences of Japanese gamers.

tl;dr: The Legend of Zelda (1986) is not an action adventure with beefed-up mechanics, it is an action RPG with simplified mechanics.
