Its a goofy game in a lot of ways and has some weird difficulty consistency but I love the game.

I don't like how you have to backtrack to kill useless no challenge enemies because you don't have the right sword when you first fight them. Other than that it's a great game with fantastic music.

I always thought the game stood out due to the freeing people mechanic but I don't remember much about it past the beginning.

I can only think of Brave Fencer Musashi and I think the Dark Cloud games which I haven't played yet as other games that did it. Maybe Legend of Mana would count too.

Maybe it was just me but I sometimes forget who I set free and I miss on talking to some NPCs. I end up wasting a lot of time just talking to NPCs.

At least you actually have the option to backtrack and retrace your steps for missables, something you can't always do in other games. And there are only maybe, what 3 or 4 items you are intended to backtrack for? Some metal enemies in the 1st and 3rd worlds, and some spirit enemies in one of the temples of the 2nd world.

The music is good, even if I wish there was more of it. The map music is awesome, but most people never sit and listen to it because it takes like a few seconds at most to select where you are going.

One thing this game really nails is the fun magic system, something Terranigma falls flat with. If only the regular enemies were more of a challenge instead of just appearing out of portals and beelining slowly towards you.

Temple of Light music kinda gave me the creeps. Gave me the vibe of some ritual music to summon demons and shit.

Fun fact, if you hack in the final sword at the beginning of the game using a game genie or something you can cut through most bosses invincibility phases cause the game counts it as metal.

I was showing off Soul Blazer and Castlevania IV a few years ago to my young nephew. To him, the Gamecube and PS2 were the consoles he remembers. He was shocked that SNES games on a real CRT TV (with inky blacks and the subtle blurring effect to mask the low resolution) combined with an external audio receiver/speakers looked and sounded so good. He didn't believe me at first that I was showing him games from the early 90s.

It's a legit fun game. It reminds me of BoF's town system in 2 and 3, only the whole game is that. Terranigma is also good, and Illusion of Gaia is the spiritual successor which is my favorite of the three.

I think I got everything. Some of these things are bullshit, though. Like, how was I supposed to know you can move the tulips in world 1 to get the pass to go into the secret cave?

Or that there's a secret wall in the gnome town to get one of the emblems?

Or that you can talk to one of the fucking doors in Leo's lab?
