It's set in the Tim Burton Batman movie universe, and is supposed to be the sequel to what the movies after Batman Returns would have been, like having Billy Dee Williams Harvey Dent becoming Two-Face. And what happened to Catwoman.

Not really.
He repair cars and decided to become a vigilante. Batman chased a thief that went into Robins building and Robin thought that Batman would arrest or kill him, so he attacked Batman.

Also a little bit more history: Tim Burton had actually cast Marlon Wayans as a potential Robin candidate

There's two sequel comics. Batman '89 and the currently running Batman '89: Echoes.

Not only that but later this year in October there's a novel coming out that takes place between Batman and Batman Returns called Batman Resurrection written by John Jackson Miller

Yeah, they even got as far as making a prototype figure of Wayans. The character was painted as white later, but...

It's interesting how similar the design is to BTAS Robin. Just another thing Batman Returns influenced. Always loved that design, a perfect blend of the red, green, yellow and black. Still the best one to date.

That's literally just Robin (Tim Drake)'s costume in the comics at the time. Which everybody agreed to be a major upgrade to the OG speedos and pixie boots.
Batman Returns has jack to do with that being TAS Robin's design.

Huh. I know Tim Drake is Red Robin which is a red themed design where they removed the green (basically the best part) but I didn't know about that. I thought it was jason todd who first started wearing green pants instead of speedo. It took them that long...

That's only in TAS and in the comics about 15 years IRL after he became Robin. TAS Robin's look along with using a staff and computer skills were all lifted straight from Tim. And Jason's origin along with some of his attitude were transplanted onto TAS Tim.
He started wearing this as his first costume in '89. Jason's looked identical to Dick's old costume.

That's pretty damn cool. So it was Tim this whole time who started with the best design for Robin...

Tim had Staff, Dick has Batons right? Was that added in after-the-fact too

IIRC he only started using those after he became Nightwing. But those have been retroactively added to his earlier years in some stories.

I'm reading the comic now and it does have some interesting ideas with Harvey Dent, and tying it to themes we've been seeing a lot in media (knowing where you came from, helping community, etc) but the way they did the Harvey Dent to Two-Face turn was just... incredibly contrived.

And this Batman was incredibly incompetent, like what were they even going for here. Literally got a kid killed

I finished the 6 issues for Batman 89 and... overall I don't think I liked it much.

Pros:

- Initial presentation of Harvey Dent and African American struggle

- Idea behind "Drake Winston" as Robin

Cons:

Literally everything else. Story is contrived, weak. They start with a supposed turf war between gangs dressed up as Batman and gangs dressed up as Joker but go nowhere with that plotline. Batman being nothing like Michael Keaton's Batman or Tim Burton Batman is fine, if he weren't so incompetent and weirdly written. Return of Catwoman is not as exciting, despite brimming with potential.

The whole comic idea was full of potential but they really didn't do it justice to be honest.
