Not too many thoughts regarding this case, largely due to the game its in...and that it's forgettable even in the game its in. People liked that it's unique in the series for not having any pretense of murder and people generally liked Olivia. We also went through 20 cases without Phoenix/Maya so seeing them back together is great!

Summary:

With Espella accused of witchcraft and famed inquisitor Zacharias Barnham prosecuting her case, the only thing standing between her and the stake is Ace Baker Phoenix Wright and a certain gentleman professor.

My rating: 6.5/10. Pretty solid case. I don't really mind the caricature witnesses and, honestly, this is a pretty good selection. In some sense, it's actually pretty difficult to figure out who the murderer is because none of them really give killer vibes. Barnham pulls off the "friendly prosecutor" style way better than Klavier does and I always felt he's a really underrated prosecutor. I think he's my 4th favorite "regular prosecutor" after Edgeworth, Blackquill, and Godot. Emeer gives this case a solid point. He adds a lot of life midway through the case and makes it really memorable.

It's better than I remembered on replay, mainly because Barnham is a surprisingly fun prosecutor, and having the whole gang together for one case is fun; this is the only case where Layton is co-counsel. The murder is a little more interesting than I remembered, it has some stuff going for it. Kira is kinda fun, although I still find it bizarre that she has just a single name - the character designs in this game, and in this case particularly, don't really do it for me. Still, it's decent.

It has its moments. Kira's pretty good. Barnham is super underrated. The group testimonies in Layton aren't as good as they are in GAA that's for sure.

I pretty much agree with what others have said. Barnham is a really solid opponent, and it's kind of a shame you only face him twice. This is a case I've appreciated more on replay. Phoenix and Layton together works pretty well. Kira is a decent culprit, and the ending where she gets "executed" has pretty high shock value on a first playthrough.

Nice to see someone else say they didn't expect who the killer was. I didn't know if the game was going to use witch as a gendered term (or actually stick to the witches being the actual killers) so I really didn't see it coming.

Barnham is a delight, both in design and as an actual character. Yesterday I suggested that this game could use one more case to make better use of its magic premise, and honestly, I'd love it for making better use of the main prosecutor too (I'll get back to that in a few days)

The multiple witnesses at once is a great mechanic that I think is used pretty decently in this case. I'm kind of neutral to the designs. I've always liked the Layton style of character designs, but I don't know how well they work combined with the Ace Attorney exaggeration. But if it helped make Kira less obvious, I'm all for it.

Both duos have immediate chemistry with each other. It is so satisfying seeing Layton give Wright counsel. A shame we don't have more of them working together in the courtroom.

Decent case, nothing overwhelmingly good but nothing particularly bad either.

It's a pretty good intro to the mechanics of the game. It was surprising, yet still intuitive. It's a great introduction to Barnham, and also is the premiere of the true best character of the game, Punchenbaug.

Making the spell's name sound just like Some Guy's name was a great twist

He is the true agent of chaos in this series. Larry ain't got nothin' on him, and he only gets more chaotic from here!

Pretty good. Our first taste of a magic case and it's pretty interesting since we need to accept the premise that magic is real and how it plays into the case.
I agree that Kira's name is a bit weird, being one name only and sounding more Asian than Western (at least to me).

Decent intro to things, and I liked the multiple witnesses.

9/10. Super fun case. Thought the witness antics were hilarious and culprit was cringe cute. Phoenix remembering his competence was a great moment too.
