i'm def down to watch but, what about them really needed to be remastered in the first place?

Color grading for Fellowship 4K is more vivid and fully balanced out which needed it the most out of the three because of its diverse organic setpieces(Shire, various countrysides, Rivendell, etc), plus its age in comparison to the other two. The original extended DVD were muddier and soft looking while the "remastered" extended bluray had a godawful blue filter that fucked up the tone and natural quality of every scene.

The color grade and contrast changes in the sequels are also recorrected along with the blue filter removal but not as significant looking as Fellowship because of the higher number of dark setpieces. Personally it may be subjective depending on which movie is your favorite you'll end up analyzing frame by frame over but the first movie is the technical highlight.

Anyway, pass. I'm good watching the UHD versions at home on my own time.

Would love the chance to see them in theaters again. The first time around when I went to see RotK something happened with my contact and I had to take it out partway through and my eye was in searing pain the rest of the movie, so that sort of ruined the experience for me.

This is the best answer.

But also, the books and movies make a point of driving home how important it is that they move secretly and avoid being detected by Sauron as they move through Mordor. How the idea EVER caught on that giant birds flying in the open sky would be a good idea is beyond me.

Too long, too many scenes that slowed the pacing down just for the sake of giving a nod to book readers, etc.

It caught on because the Eagles are basically totally unchallenged in the series.

They save the group multiple times in The Hobbit, and basically win the Battle of Five Armies by themselves. Theyre able to easily extract Gandalf from Isengard, and then, after a long absence, they are somehow able to roll up on the Black Gates, seemingly out of nowhere, with nobody being aware they were coming or anywhere near there. Through all of this we neither see nor hear of them suffering a single casualty.

This creates the image of the enemy being particularly inept at dealing with the eagles, as they're basically uncontested, undefeated, undetectable stealth bombers able to traverse the entire country nearly instantly. Now, that's NOT what they are, and Tolkien's reasons for not including them with the Fellowship are very clear. But to a plain book reader/movie watcher, it's easy to see why they'd at least raise the question.

The movies are great, but I could not ever watch them in a theater again. ROTK was especially brutal and that was just the theatrical version. Got to watch those in the comfort of my own home.

And the Eagles debate is so tired just like the "James Bond is a codename" theory. Just shut up already.

The Disney vault wasn't about re-airing in theaters though.

But to be fair, I think some people did rebuy the home copies in each medium.

But on the third hand, that was now a long time ago. If the film people are copying anyone by reairing LotR, it's either the Star Wars OT (out of nowhere) or video games since that's actually been happening recently.

Really now?

I've tried a few extended versions such as Apocalypse Now and The Abyss.

It was just too much in one sitting.

Anyway, I already purchased the originals, but could request a refund.

The added content collection is $10 more.

Does anyone know if that includes both theatrical and extended?

It's digital so I'm guessing that it doesn't.

I'm usually with you, but LotR is probably the only time I can genuinely say the extended cut added a ton to the experience.

Sure, there's some fluff added that maybe didn't need to be there. But there's also some extremely plot-critical stuff that's just sort of glossed over with a line of exposition in the theatrical cut. There's one EXTREMELY noticeable hanging thread dealing with a major antagonist that is cut com0letely in the theatrical cut.

Beyond that, the movies just have more room to breathe. While you may not notice it if you've only seen the theatrical cuts, there's a lot of jerky editing, awkward cuts, and weirdly-sped up scenes they had to do to squeeze down the runtime. Only seconds at a time, but it adds up, and makes things feel awkwardly rushed. The first conversation between Frodo and Gandalf feels like some weird rapid-fire script reading with a big exposition dump in the theatrical cut, but feels like an actual conversation between old friends in the extended. The movies just... FEEL better in their full form.

Can't speak to the digital versions, but the physicals even had "intermissions" of sorts partway through each movie, so you could take a break and space it out if you felt like it was too much at a time.

It really is just the better experience. Most extended cuts just feel like they're awkwardly shoehorning in deleted scenes. This one feels like it's genuinely the way it was intended to be presented, and the cut version was the studio/theater mandate.

You are NOT suppose to watch it all in one sitting unless you are at home or at a friends so bathroom breaks equal a paused movie or view it in 1 hr and 30 mins segments.

Every extended edition is meant to be seen at your convenience.

This is also why I refused to see the new Dune movies in theaters, too long too boring, and takes up too much time. LOTR and TH had action to keep you invested, Dune is NOT an action movie so it is better viewed at home as it just creeps along way to slow to see in a theater.

Rereleases have always played an important role in movies. In the early days, when bootlegging and piracy were rife, exhibitors would supply any titles they wanted to the movies they showed. The rise of movie stars like Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin gave distributors the opportunity to capitalize on their earlier work. William Fox, the head of a film company that would eventually become Twentieth Century Fox, was something of an expert at repackaging his studios material. In 1918, while the country was still in the grips of a deadly flu epidemic, Fox began reissuing films from as early as 1915. He continued the practice in 1919 and 1920, this time giving his old films new titles. 1916s The Love Thief became 1920s The She Tiger. (A few years later the New York State Superior Court ruled the practice illegal.)
