Long story short is a YouTuber named Jelloapocalypse posted a now-deleted blog post about how the show he worked on, the author, the JP voices, etc. were all garbage and he worked to improve them (in his words, his changes were the only things that made it good).

Basically threw his peers under the bus in the process and subsequently got blacklisted by the industry after that.

Getting consequences for his actions doesnt mean that it never happened, or that his peers that think like him but dont say it out loud have yet to get their comeuppance.

People seem to prefer localization, only if it agrees to their preconceived political beliefs. I'm always against it completely; it seems like the people defending these localizations also got mad at the localizations in Netflix's Evangelion sub such as changing a previous translations version of "Love" to "Like" or "Terrorism" to "Left Wing Terrorism."

For me, I want to respect the original authorial intent no matter what. It's frankly offensive for a "localizer" to think they should "improve" a work because whether you like the change or not it wasn't the original author's intent for it to be read like that. It's essentially like me splashing yellow paint all over a statue because yellow is my favorite color; I might find it more aesthetically pleasing but that wasn't what the creator intended.

CE isnt nuanced or unbiased in this issue either.

I remember in a previous topic, in the span of two minutes, CE went of course a degenerate like YOU would care about the accuracy of a dogfucker anime to what do you mean you never watched the show, how do you know resting bitch face isnt an accurate translation then. I already forgot the name of the anime and had to look it up, but it was My Life as Inukai-sans Dog (almost put Pet instead of Dog, if that hammers in how much I otherwise forgot about this shows existence).

When it doesnt take two brain cells to know that it wasnt at all what was said, or that the localizer also claimed to be a fan of the show despite the premise. (so its okay for the localizers to be degenerate but not the audience?)

And when you bring up stuff like the Lovely Complex thing, theyre apparently just one-off incidents and not saying the quiet part out loud about their disdain for Japanese media.

Meh, it's the hate du jour. Some people just aren't happy unless they have something to be outraged about. And they're even less happy if they can't suck the enjoyment out of something for everyone else.

Weren't like any of the changes he tried to implement even in the final version anyway, and he made himself look like a fool for nothing?

Also, wasn't that an entirely "fan" dubbed project? As in, a voice actor just bought the rights to dub it on her own for cheap because she was a huge fan of the show, as a passion project, and wasn't at all reflective of what a typical dubbing process looks like?

He made it sound like his changes were final and everyone had to say otherwise. So yes, he made himself (and the entire localization process) look like a joke, but he still acted like an authority figure at the time.

Not sure about the second part. I heard Discotek didnt put a lot of budget into the dubbing/localizing, but I hadnt heard about it being 100% fan-funded.

I don't see how it makes you alt right to want accurate translations. While some of the localizations sound better grammatically, some of them are losing their original meaning.

I'd say outside of localization it's like if people complain about Woke crap like Ghostbusters 2016, but bend over backwards to defend or justify liking Non-Woke crap like Bayformers I-V.

Such a thing still doesn't guarantee one being alt-right, but it is hard to think charitably about said contradiction.

And in one case, take the anime Ghost Stories. Deemed boring and a failure, the dub peppered it with much comedy (some less PC) and I don't think I heard any serious backlash against it.

The dub makes it more fun and entertaining, but such a fact doesn't equal good.

So I've been playing this in Spanish, and after beating the Runic Golem with the 6 month timeskip, so far it seems to be an in between of the English translation and the Japanese original. Like on one hand, Lian doesn't go "well THAT was a thing" and asks what the hell that was, and the description of being a "bomber girl" when joining the party is completely different than "Full Thrust Fighter" and presumably is referenced later when in the ruins she rubs the lens essentially saying "rub rub, open or explode!" which is different in English. But at the same time there were some bits and bobs that still carried over that felt out of place, it's hard to describe.
