So back in the day Toys R Us didn't give cash refunds when you returned something so they would give you vouchers they called Geoffrey dollars named after their mascot.

Biggest rip off ever! I vividly recall my dad literally arguing with store managers over that.

Nope; never followed Toy R Us news and this is the first I've heard of a Geoffrey dollar.

I remember that they existed, but I never really shopped in Toys 'R' Us all that often, so I never really had any and never really knew what their full policy was for them.

Here's a picture of them for people in this topic who've never heard of them:

It's not actually illegal for a store to say in advance that they don't offer refunds, and only offer store credit vouchers. Which is basically what the bucks were.

Basically, you can use fake currency as refund vouchers, gift cards, coupons, or a combination of the above. Toys 'R' Us just turned it into something cutesy because it tied into their attempt to look like a happy fun place to shop (even though they engaged in a lot of anti-consumerist practices whenever they could get away with it).

Given that you would have been a child at the time you probably didn't understand what was going on. The "Geoffrey Dollars" were gift certificates aka store credit. People frequently try to get returns in store credit when they don't have a receipt or some other situation which may cause the return to be denied such as an open video game or something. I am unfamiliar with Toys R Us ever refusing returns as a general rule or "scheme" so I find the story the TC tells to likely be lacking some details.

Yup. These were essentially "gift cards" I seem to remember being able to get $1 ones as giveaways/promos sometimes, that way you would beg your parents to take you.
