There used to be a famous newspaper comic strip called For Better or For Worse. Within the world of the strip, time passed and characters aged in real time alongside the real world. Imagine if The Simpsons had always been like this from the very beginning. In 2024 the show would be very different.

Homer and Marge would be in Grandpa Simpson's role. Bart, Lisa and Maggie would be grown up and have their own kids maybe

Perhaps more people would still watch the show and see it as fresh

What if Mr. Burns was still alive in this scenario and looking about the same age as he does in our universe's version of The Simpsons, courtesy of his exorbitant wealth granting him access to better healthcare than any other member of the cast could possibly hope to afford?

Luann is another comic that let characters age as well, though it looks like she's only in her 20's now. (Edit: Correction, Luann is 19 currently and was 13 when the comic started in 1985.)

Regarding For Better or For Worse, I still remember the comic where the family dog, Farley, died saving Elizabeth. (Edit: Correction, it was April, not Elizabeth.)

Yea I remember that story arc. I remember blaming the girl for getting in that situation and forcing the dog to sacrifice its life.

Eh, kids are dumb. I don't know how I felt about it when it first released, though.

Coincidentally, while checking the comic for names on the characters, that arc actually just finished again. The whole event took place over a few weeks, starting with April trying to get permission to go outside and ending with Elizabeth and her friend visiting the spot where they buried Farley. Still made me cry.

There is an old Swedish comic called Bamse, where a few years in, the main character got kids and they aged in real time

Then they stopped aging them up
